Nothing groundbreaking here, but this is going to really drive in-car tech and touchless control. Can't wait to see what this looks like a few years down the road when apps designed for in-car use are maturing and getting some real money.

(But I don't look forward to the new wave of distracted driving.)

IMO, they should disable messages whenever the car is in anything but park. Even listening and dictating can be distracting.

Yup. I would love to be able to "display" Google Maps from my Nexus 5 on my huge display in my Dodge Journey. That would be awesome and always up to date. I'm sure more stuff like this is coming. Just not fast enough damnit!

So if you don't have a compatible iPhone, you're SOL? At least right now my Civic worked with both my iPhone and now my Moto X in exactly the same way. I'm worried that I'd have a useless system if I didn't spend $750 on an iPhone.

Odd they aren't offering android as well, thats such a significant segment of the market today.

Really cool though, want more like this, anything that attempts to capture Tesla's awesome display center is great in my books.

Google is doing something similar with other companies, and some of the same companies. Its kind of annoying though if you have to make car buying decisions based on which phone OS you use.

Although, I don't see a huge advantage over using something like a moto x with its car dock and having phone, music, and nav sounds all come over blue tooth.

Not only does this CarPlay not allow a massive amount of phones on the market but only playing nice with iPhone, it only uses the latest iPhone's (5, 5c, 5s). Can't imagine having a Car OS that only interacts with such a small amount of the market. If there was ever a time you'd want Apple products to sync with other products, it's now.

The cell phone market is changing so quickly, new flagship devices every month. Seems insane to buy a new car in 2014 and have to be locked into a certain phone for the next several years. It's fine if you're buying something like a set-top box for a TV, but with a car? No thanks.

Except that's not how this works. It's not a car OS. It's to display and interact with iOS on head units in the dash. It doesn't put iOS in the head unit.

It simply allows the head unit to act as a second screen for an iPhone IF you have one. If you don't you, use the head unit as is per the functionality the car maker included.

Maybe it's because I drive a 13 year old clunker with a tape deck, but I'm not a big fan of these digital interfaces/computers in the dashboard. How's that touch screen gonna work in our winters? Do I need to take my gloves off to use it?

The Ferrari video shows switching between apps can be done with physical buttons, but it looked like all the interactions with the apps themselves required using the touch screen.

I'm probably not the target market for this at all, but I'm gonna miss the days of big ole buttons & physical dials being part of the dashboard. There's just certain interfaces/UI's that should remain physical instead of being rendered in pixels/digitally.

Yech, this is terrible. I keep cars 8-10 years on average - I get new phones every 2 years. Can you imagining using an 8 yr old iOS or Android device? Just a bad idea...

My F150 has the touchscreen (SYNC) for the radio, climate, Navigation and Phone. The screen works quite well, even in -40 with thick gloves on.

That being said, I still am still a fan of physical buttons and dials for climate control. but that is totally a preference thing, not due to poor performance of the touchscreen in my truck.

Was it the F40 where they never offered the option of a radio? I recall one around that era in which that was their line of thinking.
