Default Mechanic in Whitecourt?

Looking for a recommendation. My sister just started work up there as an EMT and of course on her first day of work her car breaks. She's away on a site with a company truck for now but would like to get it fixed ASAP so she's not stuck in friggin' whitecourt for any longer than nessesary.

It's an '05 Nissan Xtrail, possibly cracked block. I don't know anyone up there anymoreand I'm not able to go check it out myself either.

Looking for recommendations for a mechanic that does quality work and won't try and rip off a young girl. I'm getting information second hand so no idea what work is required or what the problem is, diagnoses will be required before any work happens.

Thanks for any help guys!

I'm up in Whitecourt tomorrow. I'll ask some of my clients for recommendations.

A cracked block on a 9 year old X-trail would likely cost more to fix than it's worth. Especially if it has typical mileage for an 05.. i.e. 150k+.

If that's the case, you would probably be best selling it for scrap.

Car's worth $15 000, worst case scenario like a cracked block will need an engine replacement. Nissan QR20DE's are dirt cheap, even if I have to buy a salvage X-Trail and pull it out of that we're looking at about $2-$3k max.

Screw it, SR20 might be even cheaper

Not to be contrarian, but average asking price for an average equipped SE model, is $7340.

http://www.canadianblackbook.com/bla...Utility%204WD/

Unless there is a gold bar in the trunk, it is worth $9995 MAX on a dealers lot if it is perfect. To be worth 12k, it would have to be factory fresh with under 50 kms and a cash buyer ta boot. No banks will finance a 2005's anymore unless it is on a line of credit (this hits the value huge), and it is a couple months from being 10 model years old, so you can't even warranty it anymore. If it has 120k+ it is worth $4-6000. Don't bury yourself in it.

Not nitpicking, just giving you advice from someone who is around this stuff all day. 10 year old RAV4's go for under 10k, even 2005 BMW X3's can be had for under 10k.

Not nitpicking either, but essentially all of those figures are wrong. I can't remember the last time I've found a black book value that's even been in the right ballpark, check the market itself. Less than 175k is still $9000+ private deal, quick look at dealerships shows $10500+

Not a chance that vehicle is worth 15k.

She bought it 2 months ago from a main dealer at $15k, and it was the cheapest non-abused one in the province, retail or private. Quoting average price across Canada means nothing in Calgary's market.

For the sake of your argument lets say it's value somehow took a nosedive, and was only worth half of that now. Fixing it is still the better option.

Well there aren't very many on the market, but just did a provincial search in Alberta on autotrader.

There are 6 on the market and the most expensive (with only 82kms) is retailing at 12k sticker.

She got bent over.

That said its beside the point now. Fixing will likely still be cheaper if its only 2-3k as you said.

Well I guess you'll just have to take my word for it that it was the cheapest and best at the time. There were some in the $17-18 range

Edit: Looks like you are right in the current market though, I see one in similar condition at the same dealer she went to, same colour, around the same kilometers and a few less features, for $12k. Market wasn't like that at the time though.

For curiosity's sake that would be interesting to see what it'd be worth now (minus the cracked block, of course)

It's an '05 (possibly '06?) 78k, SE AWD, power windows, remote start, remote & power locksAC, sunroof, automatic

77k definitely puts it above average/extra clean. So 12k wouldn't be unreasonable. I assumed it was your typical bagged out 10 year old ride. That is a tough call you don't see too many 10 year old cars with that K. But it is definitely as low as you'll find, and definitely not worth scrapping if you can fix it for 2k. However like I mentioned in the PM, double check if it came with a power train warranty.

Edit: Especially if it is an 06, holy crap those are going for large, maybe you weren't so far off:

Cheers, I'll get back to you tomorrow. Being a bagged pos was definitely a safe assumption on your part.

Try Glenn's Service and Repair (780-778-2499). It is a small, independent shop. Otherwise, there isn't much more than the dealers (Ford, GM, Chrysler) and Canadian Tire.

A used engine from a1automotive.net will run you about $1800, they list the engine as having 60,000 km. No idea what a shop would charge to do the swap.

Thanks!

At this point I may do the the swap myself just looking to verify it's whats needed first.

Thanks I'll check it out. Do you have any experience with them?

I had a vehicle in there about 4 or 5 years ago and I was happy with their service. They got the vehicle road worthy again without going overboard (it was an older car).
