Default TelyHD video conferencing

Searched a bit for a similar thread but couldn't find one.

Just looking for a simple but effective solution to connect one of our meeting rooms too our showroom location. I have used Skype in the past and it works rather well, but that means I need a laptop in the meeting room all the time to plug into the TV.

TelyHD seems to get pretty good reviews. Eliminates the need for a computer or laptop. Just plug into HDMI port on TV and go.

Anyone ever try it?

Never heard of it, but looks very similar to the Logitech TV Cam HD.

Both have the same specs and technical limitations (point-to-point only, 720p HD video).

Is there a system like this that works with Google Hangouts? I really like the option of not having to use an additional computer or laptop, but Google Hangouts is better than Skype.

Nah. Nothing like that for it without interoperating with another platform using something like Vidyo and then a proper standalone H.323/SIP endpoint or room system (Polycom, Cisco Telepresence), which is several thousand dollars on the side of impractical.

Hangouts is garbage anyway. They should have stuck with GTalk and built on top of XMPP or moved to a SIP based service, instead of moving to a proprietary protocol.

So a unit like TelyHD or the Logitech system would be better?

I suppose if you're just connecting two locations it would probably work fine.

At this point, it's your only choice without having a standalone PC/laptop/mobile device there. The benefit to the TelyHD and Logitech cameras is that the client is baked into the device, so it can behave as a standalone unit.

If the display it's connected to will be on all the time and constantly tuned to that input, then you're good. Only complaints I hear about those is the fact that you have to turn on the TV and switch inputs usually, which on modern TVs takes an annoyingly long time.

Remember when turning on a TV took all of three seconds from off to displaying a picture?
