Shooting has apparently started. There are reports of Russian troops storming the parts of Sevastopol where Ukrainian troops refused to surrender and join the Russians. Buildings are reportedly on fire but Russia is keeping the press far away.

Waiting on verification of the source right now. This one needs translation

This one wouldn't surprise me. Given how badly the Ukrainian navy is outnumbered in Sevastopol, staying there only invites the ships to be captured and there are reports of a the Ukrainian flagship being captured/defecting. The Ukrainian military command structure is in shambles with its top commander of the military has been dismissed twice in the last months. The first one dismissed by because he refused to fire on protesters then again when the new government came into place.

I'm not master in Ukranian, but since it's similiar to Russian, it basically says that russians are "storming" barricaded troop units, however I didn't find the mention of "shooting", only "threatening to shoot". It's not russians, but ukranian defending troops are preparing to defend and telling press to go away (to not get hurt). Nothing in Russian media on it, yet.

Meanwhile russian media report that pro-Russian mob in Lugansk, yet another Ukrainian town, not in Crimea, declared the new government "illegal" and asked Russia to sent their troops over there. They pressed local government to sign such a resolution, they declined, so mob storme their local government house.

P.S. Just to make it clear, I am posting reports from Russian sources, but I don't imply that those reports are necesserily true.

I'm only using Google translate so a thing or two might be lost in translation. Apparently more video from the encounter. I have no idea what they are saying.

They speak Russian. Troopers demand the man, who is appearantly some ukrainian officer, to take his truck (Kamaz) away and let them in. The man refuses to do so, saying that Russians are looking to take weapons that belong to the ukrainian squad away. He says, you want to do it peacefully, so do it peacefully. The last exchange is ukrainian is asking "so you can`t do it normally?" and the someone responses "Normally?".

Article for the same event, Russians wanted access and weapons from the Ukrainian naval base. Ukrainians refused. Standoff ensued. Tense situations like these all it takes is one person with an itchy trigger finger or hot temper.

Sounds like the military folks that are leaving and supporting the russians are just trying to save being eliminated.

Ukrainian Navy flagship Hetman Sahaidachny has reportedly refused orders from Kiev and defected to the Russian side a Russian senator has claimed in an interview with Ivestia Daily.

http://www.businessinsider.com.au/uk...warship-2014-3

Interesting if true, or could be just propaganda. How would the west view the warship? Is it still considered to be owned by Ukraine, Would it be considered a prize under Admirality law since this occured in international waters? From what I understand from wikipedia "Under contemporary international law and treaties, nations may still bring enemy vessels before their prize courts, to be condemned and sold." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prize_(law

Ukraine's Navy chief in Sevastopol has defected to the Russians. The guy had just been appointed by the Ukrainians to that position for one whole day. A treason investigation is being opened up against him by the Kiev government.

Russian soldiers are reportedly also digging trenches at the Crimea border to defend and consolidate their positions.

Quote:
The newly appointed head of Ukraine's navy has sworn allegiance to the Crimea region, in the presence of its unrecognised pro-Russian leader.

Rear Admiral Denys Berezovsky was only made head of the navy on Saturday, as the government in Kiev reacted to the threat of Russian invasion.

Admiral Berezovsky appeared in Sevastopol before cameras alongside Sergiy Aksyonov, the pro-Russian politician elected by Crimea's regional parliament as local prime minister.

The admiral then pledged to "strictly obey the orders of the supreme commander of the autonomous republic of Crimea" and "defend the lives and freedom" of Crimea's people.

Those guys in Kiev seems to have no clue which people they can rely on and which they can not. Doesn't bode well for them...

Russian media reports Putin agreed to Merkel's proposal to form an international diplomatic OSCE group to investigate the situation in Crimea.

Which fits well with the theory that Putin's plan is to let UN/OSCE watch the Crimea's vote, being confident that the vote will go his way.

The guys in Kiev just finished pushing out all of the previous power brokers under Yanukovych's government. Military wasn't involved in that entire protest and the new guys coming in do not know anything about them.

Like I was saying earlier, the military chain of command is in complete disarray. The new government knew all the top level officers that were loyal to Yanukovych and but didn't bother looking at the ones next in line.
