This is crazy.... this is the first time I actually believe a full on huge fataing war could erupt here that Canada is going to get dragged into... it's kind of scary.
Wow the peacefulness of the Olympics just a week ago and now this?!?! Looks like hosting the Olympics for Putin may even be part of the tactics...Cloak and Dagger technique. This does not look good for the long term of the world....
I want to say I can't believe this is actually happening, but I totally believe this is happening. Russia is a piece of ####. I wish Putin would just die and save the world from his pissy drama Cold War mentality. ####ing dinosaur.

There is no way we or anyone else gets dragged into this. Russia will annex Crimea citing it's their traditional land and everyone there is Russian anyway. That'll be the end of it other than a wide range of sanctions against Russia by the west. I feel terrible for the people of Ukraine, very little hope to hang onto there. I hope our government can give some of their citizens refugee status if they need to escape.

Putin will pay a "cost" according to Obama. So there's that.
Obama needs to stop talking publicly and start talking behind the scenes. He's setting himself for the massive and inevitable embarrassment when they do nothing.

Well, we could give them some land in Saskatchewan....

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
Seeing as Putin thinks he's such a badass, Klitchko should just challenge him to a fight over the Crimea. The idiot's strongman ego might not let him turn it down.
Some Russians believe they are protecting Ukraine:

No change' in US military stance:
US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel spoke on Saturday with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Shoigu, a US official told Reuters, as Russian President Vladimir Putin secured his parliament's authority to invade Ukraine.
Asked about rumors some US military units had been on alert over turmoil in the Crimean peninsula, the official said the US focus was on diplomatic options. There was no change in the US military's stance, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"I deplore today's decision by Russia on the use of armed forces in Ukraine. This is an unwarranted escalation of tensions. I therefore call upon the Russian Federation not to dispatch such troops, but to promote its views through peaceful means. The unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine must be respected at all times and by all sides. Any violation of these principles is unacceptable. More than ever, restraint and sense of responsibility are needed."
Protesters in Kharkov have raised a Russian flag over their parliament building. I wonder if these are actual protesters or plants of some kind. Donetsk also had a number of pro Russian rallies happen earlier in the today. How many will "request" Russian intervention and how many troops will the Russians send?
"Military intervention would be the beginning of war and the end of any relations between Ukraine and Russia."
Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk
Ukraine's army has been put on alert, the country's interim president Oleksanr Turchynov said Saturday, after Russia's parliament approved the deployment of troops into the ex-Soviet state.

Would not surprise me one bit to see either a) the east of Ukraine split to join Russia, b) the east split to create a new country closely aligned with Russia or c) outright civil war where Russia claims the leftovers.
The west and more specifically the EU cannot afford to absorb a broken state like Ukraine, there is no oil or strategic resource there other than a geopolitical score to settle with Russia.
I am glad to hear everyone is an expert all of a sudden. Ukraine in itself is divided.
The video is taken yesterday from Kharkiv's main square.
Russia might actually bring a stabalizing factor(I doubt that though). War is never a good thing and I hope they will be able to avoid it at all costs. For now I think it is only a show of power so that the ones that siezed power will follow the agreements made during the negotiations between them and Yanukovich(sp). As for the politicians right now in power they were not chosen by actual elections, but by a mob. A mob that now they cannot control.
Stop reading listening only to western media and then maybe you will get the whole picture. And one last comment as for Russia not being able to trade with civilized countries, the world is more than depended on russian oil and gas for now... it can always switch back to Iran of course. You guys just always have rose colored glasses regarding all of the west's action, but as soon as Russia does anything they are barbarians.

Which would result in the obliteration of Ukraine and eventual Russian rule. I sincerely hope the interim Ukrainian government does not entertain this. They are very likely going to lose Crimea and possibly other territory. They need to focus on the western portion of their country and realize that they may end up having an east/west Ukraine in the near future.
“It’s possible in this situation, complying with a request by the Crimean government, even to bring a limited contingent of our troops to ensure the safety of the Black Sea Fleet and the Russian citizens living on Crimean territory. The decision is for the president, the chief military commander, to make, of course. But today, taking the situation into account, even that variant can’t be excluded. We need to protect the people,” Matvienko said.
The Russian government has so far been careful in its assessment of the new self-proclaimed Ukrainian government in Kiev. Matvienko said the reason for that was Russia counting on its Western partners, who vowed to guarantee the February 21 agreements between ousted Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich and the opposition.
“Russia did not interfere in the situation in Ukraine for a very long time and showed restraint, assuming that the Western states, which became backers of the agreements, would see that strict compliance with the deal is observed,” she said.
However, after “violent upheaval” took place in Ukraine, the Western states did not come up with “any reasonable measures or responses,” Matvienko said.
Russia, in contrast, for a very long time has urged the situation to be resolved by lawful means, and called for the anti-coup sentiments in Crimea and in eastern Ukraine to be heard, she said.
“Not seeing an adequate reaction from the West, we could no longer maintain status quo,” the speaker concluded.
