Might be the most epic trade I've seen in many years, so many different elements. St Louis gave up a lot, but are now frontrunners for the Cup in my mind.
To STL
Miller (BUF retains salary) & S.Ott
To BUF
Halak, Stewart, Carrier, 2014 (conditional) 1st, 2015 1st, 2016 3rd

For those wondering how Buffalo makes the cap floor, I can see them taking on a bad contract or two with at least another year left on it in some of these trades to maximize their return. For example, trading Moulson to Chicago and taking on Bickell, a 1st and a 2nd. In this trade they got Stewart back who has a year left on his contract.
They'll likely be taking salary back if they trade Ehrhoff or Myers as well.
That plus overpaying for a free agent or two.

I think it's a good trade both ways. But I also don't think its a big upgrade from Halak to Miller. St. Louis doesn't seem to have an issue preventing goals so I guess we will see if it really makes much of a difference. Halak always seems to play good in the playoffs, even back to his Montreal days.
Now Ott for Stewart seems like a win for St. Louis. Ott is the all around pain in the ass player that has some skills whereas Stewart just seems, to me anyway, as the guy who got by on his physical tools and only worked once in a while.

LOL, I'm sure the Blues would be happy to make the western finals but if they lose and don't sign Miller or Ott the trade would be epic fail.
2014 1st
2015 1st
Stewart
Halak
Carrier
for
Nothing

They basically have to fill 1/2 of a roster.. the only players they have signed for next year are:
Leino-Hodgson-Stafford
Girgenous-Flynn-Ellis
Stewart
(Ennis/Foligno are RFAs)
Myers-Ehrhoff
Weber
Enroth

Sabres are going to have to flip some of those picks for roster players somewhere down the line.

I could see them going in a couple different directions.
Pull a Florida from a couple years ago and sign/trade for a bunch of mid-price veterans to short-term deals, some of which may be traded at the next deadline.
They could also sign a couple of higher-priced veterans to long-term deals and fill the rest of the team from their growing prospect pool.
Given the free agent class this year and the unattractive nature of Buffalo as a destination for free agents, I think the former will happen.

Ehrhoff is still there but he was asked to provide his list of 8 teams to comply with the limited NTC clause in his contract.

There was the rumor/speculation that the Sabres will give Callahan his contract demands.

Makes me wonder if Buff goes big game hunting at the draft and targets players

I'd also say its relatively easy to be the Sabres GM at this point... they evidently are willing to be completely embarrassing and non-competitive, fans be damned. (Although they have managed to win three in a row)

I would say at this point, they might not have any other option then to try and give out a few big contracts next year.

Fans are capable of seeing the big picture. The Sabres aren't the first professional sports franchise in North America to undergo a rebuild.

If the Flames had traded guys like Iginla and Kipper three years earlier, these would have been the types of returns they would have gotten.
They waited too long, and had their hand forced. I think the returns they got weren't too bad, all things considered.

I could see players like Moulson being flipped for young roster players instead of picks now. Sabres have the picks available to add to Moulson to bring in good young players.
Moulson + a couple picks to get someone like Toffoli as an example.

Obviously not everyone understands it when they claim things like "their rebuild is perfect so far"
With Ehrhoff on the block too, they are going to have zero veteran presence. The same thing that is costing the Oilers.
