Sounding like St. Louis' 2014 first rounder is part of the deal too, barring a condition. Trying to find out the condition (it's either Miller re-signing or them winning the Cup)

What I got out of Murray's comments it was pending Miller being signed by St.Louis. "They may sign him or they may not, and thats where the condition on the 2014 pick comes in"

John Vogl @BuffNewsVogl
The Sabres get St. Louis 1st-round pick in 2014 if Blues make Western Conference finals or Ryan Miller re-signs. 1st round in 2015 automatic

Blues clearly recognize this is their year. Youth and drafting be damned, they want to be the champs.

Wow potentially two first rounders. What a trade for the Sabres. Good for both teams really. The Blues need elite goaltending. They are a scary, scary team.

How does Buffalo get to the cap floor next year?

Well that 2nd first round pick swings it a bit in Buffalo's favour for me. But people are over-rated what the Blues are giving up. They upgraded in net and at forward and gave up a prospect and a late first round pick.

This talk of 2015 being a deep draft is a nifty story right now... but is 26 players deep which is about where the 2015 pick would be.

So did the Islanders

From the 2008 to 2012 drafts the Islanders had 7 first round picks (5 top 10, 4 top 5 and a 1st overall), 7 second round picks and 8 third round picks.

It's not just about having a bunch of picks, it's about drafting well with them.

I know that Miller was a free agent, but how does Buff come close to the cap floor next year?

Are they in danger of being under the cap floor this year if they trade more players?

What a first trade by Tim Murray wow. Great for both teams and now makes St.Louis the cream of the crop in the West.

I dunno... they've got some pieces but as it stands they'll be ridiculously young. They need some veterans.

Yes, I'm aware. Nevertheless they're set up nicely for the future.

They did retain some of Miller's salary this year so that would help them in that regard.

And developing them - which is tough when you have to bring them into the NHL too early

Obviously everyone understands this but Buffalo has a pretty good track record when it comes to drafting over the last ten years. More picks are always better than less picks.

lol, 3-1 lead for Buffalo over SJ in the third. Miller and Ott who? Myers with a saavy play to set up Moulson on the third goal.

Might be a good week for us after all.
Cammy is different than Ott. Ott is a playoff type player St. Louis needed. Cammy is a goal scorer they did not. Ott's value does not necessarily determine Cammy's.

Agreed. Many a top 10 pick has been ruined by bringing them in too early.

What a trade! I like it for both teams but especially buffalo if they get that 2014 first round pick. They still have moulson to trade for a first round pick if they want... That would potentially give them 6 first round picks over the next 2 drafts! Plus they are already a young team with more guys they could trade in order to move further picks up the draft (edler or Myers for example) if they want.

I also like it for St. Louis... They don't lose any scoring or grit since Ott and Stewart post pretty similar qualities in those departments but Ott is a center who can play up and down the line up. They also get a world class goalie who is playing for a contract and would likely re-sign if St. Louis goes deep into the playoffs.

Yeah, this was a great trade for both teams but if there is another 1st involved, Buffalo made out really well
