Easy, no need to get upset, I wasn't being a dick.

No, I get that. I just find it difficult to respond to very open-ended questions sometimes.

Let's put speed cameras on every intersection in the city. Also put speed cameras on the side of every road in case we have people who speed between intersections. We also need the cameras to give out fines if signal lights are not being used when turning. We need motion detectors at every stop sign to fine those who don't come to a complete stop.
What a great city Calgary would be to live in.

I live within eye sight of one of these. It's a newly installed, permanent "solution" in our community. Except, instead of telling you how fast you're going, it just blinks the posted speed limit when it detects that you're going above it and says "slow down".
It was installed on one of the main speeding roads in my hood, and has had no visible effect on the speeding around here.
At night, you can see the light flashing quite often and most of the time, people don't even slow down. It's quite sad, especially since there's so many kids around here. I think residential cameras are a wicked idea and thin it's fair to say most people will be more prone to slow down after getting a ticket in the mail rather than seeing a blinking posted limit like this.

Only potential issue I see is that it's a bit tougher to make back the initial capital cost of the camera in residential areas where volumes are much lower, versus something like the EB 16 Ave NW at 10 St camera which flashes all day long. I hope they don't lower the margin right down to 10 kph over the limit to compensate for this.

In addition to your wonderful ideas, all cars should also have tracking devices that send your vehicle info to CPS and trigger a speeding ticket in the mail the moment it senses you exceeding the speed limit

This would be great if it stopped people from speeding and was focused on safety but it seems like it's all about the revenues. I got a ticket for speeding (going 11km over) in a school zone and the cop was literally hiding behind an unmarked vehicle with a camera. If that's not about revenues not sure what is

I have no sympathy for anyone speeding in a school zone. 11 over on Deerfoot? It would hardly be noticed. But exceeding the speed limit by 36% in school zone? They can snap those photos all day for all I care as the sole purpose of a school zone is abundantly clear.
I got a photo radar in a playground zone once. It was an area that I wasn't familiar with, I didn't see the sign, etc. It took me a minute or two to even remember that I was in that area on that day. None of which are valid excuses, so I just took it on the chin and paid it. It was fully deserved.

If you were going too fast to notice a grown man behind a vehicle in the street, it seems to follow you were also going too fast to notice a kid who might be between parked cars. That's my thinking behind that one.
I speed- I speed a LOT. However I do not speed in residential zones; nor school and playground zones.

Ah yes, the high-score machine!
I think a better solution is just mounting speed triggered flashes everywhere. People oddly enough always slam on the brakes just after they've gotten a photo ticket and see the flash.

Hear hear.
I think a lot of speed limits are a joke, but anything residential or school/playground has me going 50 or 30. It may take me an extra 15 seconds to get where I'm going, but at least I can pay enough attention to make sure I don't kill someone. People who go 10+ over in those zones are idiots.

Agree with this 100%. I am not really a crazy speeder at all (5% over kind of thing), but one place I always strictly follow is school and playground. I'm curious if the people that blaze through at 60 are intentionally ignoring the rule, or just clueless with their surroundings? I think the latter is probably more hazardous.

I think people are mostly clueless, my favourite people are the ones that pass you in a playground zone going 40 and they just keep going 40 after the playground zone ends.

Based on my experience in Helsinki, I feel cameras in residential areas are both more effective and less annoying than in other areas.
Outside of residential areas cameras tend to make people just break for the camera (because most people drive down that road all the time and know where the cameras are) and speed just after, which isn't helpful at all, and sometimes just creates situations where the traffic never settles to a specific speed.
In contrast, cameras especially in busy residential streets tend to set the general speed of the traffic, which is exactly the point. In less traveled areas, like near playgrounds and schools, I would really like more cameras. Parents that speed while dropping their kids to the school really grind my gear, stupidest thing ever.
Also, cameras do a pretty good job of keeping the nighttime speedsters in check.
