Okay, I'm kind of paranoid, so if I actually was allowed to go hiking with a gun I would honestly have it in my hand with my finger on the trigger the whole time. If a bear came at me I know I could hit him with some bullets. I would stand there and shoot every last bullet at it.

What is there to know? You point the shooty end of the gun at the thing you are trying to kill. And if it's a pistol you hold it sideways.

I could type for a thousand years and not come up with a reason as good as this for why you would never hit a bear and why the populace in general should never have "guns"
The only thing you would do is shoot yourself.
The very fact that you would think that walking with you finger on the trigger is a good idea tells me you have absolutely no concept of weapons or weapons safety.

My uncle has a bear skin hanging on his wall that would disagree with you.
While I understand where you are coming form, it's not exaclty impossible either.
Many people in firearm threads make it sound like the second the pressure starts up, people start peeing their pants, spinning around in circles firing round after round into the air.

I didn't say it was impossible, training/experience will do wonders. However, when a poster says:
Quote:
I've only ever shot a gun a few times in my life,
|
I can pretty well guess that yes, he will spinn and pee his pants.
How many times had you uncle hunted/fired a weapon prior to shooting that bear.
Also, I would guess, but might be wrong, that you uncle if he was honest would say it was not an easy shot, rather it was stressful. This is assuming you uncle was being charged and didn't just pick it off from a hide.

If your comment targeted him specifically, then maybe I'll agree with you. I'm pretty sure you have said the same thing in other threads that was a blanket statement and not against one specific person. However, you don't really know how you are going to react until you are in a real situation. Training or otherwise.
And ya, my Uncle is an experienced shooter but your comments usually involve "while under pressure" so I assumed you meant everyone, not just inexperienced shooters. Apologies if I read that wrong but I'm quite sure you've said something similar in the Ongoing mass shooting thread regarding people whom carry handguns who clearly are experienced shooters.
It was indeed a charging bear and it took him two shots, anyones guess as to which one was the fatal shot though.

Yeah I have said it in a number of other threads. People really don't understand how they react to stress and pressure. First time I was shot at I did the exact opposite of my training.
I stand my this and my previous comments. I don't want this to become purely a gin control thread, but yeah most people, including gun owners have no idea what it is like to opperate a firearm in a hig stress situation.
The fact is took you uncle, who is experienced, two shots to hit the animal tells me that most people will be bear food.

He connected on both shots. Like I said, up to you as to which one was fatal. And it was for him, a very stressful situation. No training, no ex military, just a regular shooter whom did just fine. Not always going to work out like that I realize but not as rare as you make it sound either.
This isn't a gun control discussion at all, it's how people react to pressure situations. And like I said, you can't ever know untl you are in the situation as you clearly have found yourself. Did everyone in your group react the same way when they were first shot at?

Perhaps he is the exception not the rule. I have never met him, as I have never met Sliver.....all conjecture really.

I do believe there are far more exceptions than you think there is.
And honestly not trying to start an argument with you, UCB, but you ignored that last part of my post that I was really looking forward to hearing an answer on.
Did everyone in your group react the same way as you?

I responded before you edited you post.....
Nope, because all humans aren't the same. In fact not everyone reacted the same everytime it happened.

Interesting, thanks for that! That really is curious. I assumed one would react basically in a similar fashion each time.

Being shot at, or being mortared is a bit stressful, so a number of factors can tailor you response, fatigue, anger, frustration, fear.
As I said pucker facter 11.
