The notion that a student could afford parking is hilarious? Come on man. Here's a link to the prices: http://www.ucalgary.ca/parking/files...-sept52013.pdf

You can park from $140-488 per semester, depending on where you want to park. That's about $2-6 per day. That's a weekend of partying for many students. I went to Mt. Royal from 2001-2004 and I believe our passes were in the $150-175 per semester range then. I had a job and used those funds to pay for it.

I sometimes park in front of other people's houses and then hop on transit, but it is becoming more rare now that I have found a secret parking location that is closer to downtown. It really beats paying $20 for the occasional day of parking downtown, when I already have paid for a bus pass. The house I parked in front of belongs to my mother, so I don't feel too badly about it.

On the flip side, I have had the same SUV parked in front of my house for 4 days now, and it is parked in such a way that it takes up enough space for 2 cars, given how the people at the end of the culdesac park. Everyone on our street is impacted, because either I get home soon enough to park behind him and everyone is pushed back, which isn't a big deal. Or the lady next door parks too close for me to safely parallel park on the ice mountains out there. so she ends up with a big gap in front and behind her and both me and her other neighbor have no place to park.

It comes down to it being a public street. You can't have it both ways, so if people are going to do it to me, I have no problems doing it to someone else if it saves me $20 on a random day that I need it.

As for parking at UofC, there are so many options for parking unless you are totally full time. If you are, and need to be at school all day, then just suck it up and take transit. Chances are you need the time to study anyway.

A couple thousand for tuition, 500 for parking (Mount Royal was between 340-500 by 2010), car insurance, gas, food, rent.

Let's say you make 14 bucks an hour, work 32 hours a week on average over 6 months. You'd make about 9000 after taxes and such.

Tuition - 2500 (just ballpark)
Books - 500
Rent/utilities - 4200 (700 x 6)
Insurance - 420 (70 x 6)
Cellphone - 360 (60 x 6)
Gas - 390 ($30 every two weeks)

Total just from that: $8370

Meaning you've got around $100 a month for food. And no money for a 300-500 dollar parking pass.

Maybe there are a lot of people here who had someone pay for their school. But when you go to school full time and pay for it yourself, no, a parking pass isn't all that affordable.

Oh man, front street parking ...

I live on a crescent with bylaw-mandated rear parking for two vehicles. Nice corner lot with a huge backyard, which is a fair reward for the at-best one vehicle I am able to park out front where the sidewalk curves. I'm on my second set of neighbours who think it is a perfectly acceptable practice to go door to door down the street whenever someone is parked in front of their house. I've even had instances where they are very persistent that the vehicle is mine/owned by a visitor of mine as they "have noticed it parked in front of my house for days on end in the past". Yes, you did, and no, I didn't feel the need to confront everyone within 10 houses and insist they move it. Maybe if the wonderful oversized parking pad you have out back wasn't piled with garbage and old furniture from your move, you would have other options.

You f#&$ing f!%~s can f*@# right off with that.

I'm not sure I get your math, or why you are using 6 months. Also, if you are only making $22,000 per year, you aren't going to be taxed at a 23% rate. You'd be more around the 6-7% effective rate.

The months that you aren't in school, you are able to work full time, and save some of that money. There are scholarships available too. Apply for as many as you can. I worked as a server/bartender through my schooling, and took a second job in the summer. I was only making $5.90/hour in wages, but would add about $20 per hour in tips. I graduated debt free and had a parking pass each semester. In no way did I think it was hilarious that I could afford the pass. I would have absolutely loved to have free parking, but I did what I had to do, in order to pay for it, food, rent, car, tuition, bills, etc. It can be done.

It's great that it CAN be done, but that doesn't mean it's easily done by everyone. Not everyone can be servers and get scholarships.

It's still hilarious that a $300-500 parking pass is a logical option for those who live on their own and pay for their own school. My calculations were pretty basic (and based on 6 months since two full semesters are split nicely into 6 month periods) but whether you have 800 or 2000 left over after everything but food, a parking pass that uses 25-60% of your disposable income IS hilarious.

Buy one if you want, but saying it's easily affordable by everyone is a joke. Plus, school is CLEARLY more expensive than it was when you went 10-15 years ago. Especially Mount Royal.

At the end of the day, regardless of how affordable it is, if you're asking whether I'll pay 300 to park, or have an extra 300 for absolutely anything else? ...yeah, I'm going to go ahead and park in front of someone's house for free.

Go nuts. Lucky for you most people take responsibility for themselves and pay to park in designated parking spots. If everybody had your attitude, the "right" to park willy-nilly all over neighbourhoods would be taken away everywhere. Like in the Kensington area and other places where you need a sticker - that originates from communities fighting back against freeloaders parking where it's rude to park instead of in designated lots.

Alright hero, fight the good fight.

I don't think painting me as an irresponsible freeloader with a bad attitude because I park on the street is valid, but I'm cool with it.

You'd probably be able to find quite a few people who would argue my level of twattage has been all over the place since I got here. I've even done my best to turn it down a notch! Maybe just get over it?

I think he's just mad because I drive in the left lane AND park on the street.

I'm a monster y'all, a straight up monster.

No hard feelings though, I'm sure 4x4 is nice enough. I'm up for forgiveness cuddles if he wants. Clothing mandatory.

See, this is the part that I don't get about you guys that are constantly getting banned and returning with different names. Where are the kicks? Getting another anonymous person riled up? Do you really get something out of it?

Seriously, wasn't even talking to you in the first place. No hard feelings.

(And claiming I'm some guy who constantly gets banned is just being a troll)

You weren't talking to me? Really? I missed the memo where we are only allowed to reply when spoken to.

And getting defensive about something obvious is just bad form.

You know what RGMG?

When bars have a special like "wing night" and the wings you get on that night are markedly lower in quality than the ones you would get any other night.

I know they're busier, but come on son.
