Let's not assume that Cammalleri isn't the type of player Burke wants on his team. Keep in mind that Burke wanted to sign Cammalleri for his "rebuilding" Leafs. Cammy is older now, but that doesn't mean Cammy isn't a player Burke likes and it doesn't mean that Burke sees this team as "rebuilding" in a different way than he saw the Leafs way back when.

depending how active the Flames plan to be, I would be fine with moving both, signing a centre and moving Backlund to LW

It's not. Not even a little bit.

I don't think it's that far off honestly. Brodin is a solid piece but he's overrated because he's young. He's not the next OEL. More like a next Edler if he reaches his potential.
The Wild would get back a top line playmaker which is almost exactly what they need.

Considering the MASSIVE expectations of a roster overhaul I can only believe that we will be thoroughly disappointed.
I think Stempniak is gone for a 2nd and that's about it.

Better have some depends on hand. This is shaping up to be a very boring trade deadline. In years gone by there have been some deals made in lead up, and nothing this year. This is after GMs have had a couple weeks to talk and negotiate back and forth without interruption. This year looks like a sleeper.

With no deals so far on the lead up I would say that deadline day will be bigger than normal this year. When all the big trades happen before that is when the let down occurs

Toronto is looking for a Top 4 defenceman.
I wonder if we take Clarkson off their hands for Wideman?

What is it with his character or play that gives you the feeling that he isn't the type of guy the Flames want around for a re-build?
He's not the biggest or most physical, but I wouldn't say he's the kind to bail on a play along the boards in fear and not everyone has to be 6'2, 200+.

Name competition.

How many teams can take on a big name contract? It's great to start tossing names around, but its another to fit a player under the cap. Do you know how many teams have less than $5 million in cap space heading into the deadline? 13. And all of those are teams with playoff hopes, looking to make a deal. Moulson is most likely to be the name that attracts the most attention because he's got a cap hit that can fit on most teams without some money sent the other way. All these other big names come with big tickets that will be very difficult to fit under the cap. Cammalleri, Stastny, St. Louis, Vanek, Miller, and Myers are all north of that $5 million mark. Callahan is over $4 million. Some big names out there, but there are some really tight budgets too.

The good thing about this is we can easily afford to take salary back.

I love the collective amnesia over trade deadlines. They usually fizzle. Every year we see all sorts of comments along the lines of "I can't believe I took a day off work for this!" And yet the next year, the same anticipation and the same disappointment. TSN are masters at marketing this stuff.

Our ability to take back salary is marginalized by the other team's desires. How many playoff teams, looking to make a push, are going to be willing to dump a player for salary reasons? Trades at this time of year are normally made for futures because teams don't want to divest themselves of experienced players that can help in the post season.
We would have to retain salary of what we are sending over, and for that we will want other future considerations. Same will go with every other team out there. I'll be surprised if there are many name players dealt, unless someone takes a bath on value just so they get something before the asset becomes almost worthless. An example of that would be the Islanders with Vanek. They paid through the nose to get him, so they may want to minimize their losses and take anything for him. Of course, they'll have to retain salary, and Wang may be hesitant to do so, so no deal is certain.

I'd expect 25 to 35 trades between now and the deadline, but maybe only 5 to 10 involving top players. That would be enough to keep me interested
