Snowmobiler shoots Moose with a glock
Warning. Video is graphic.
http://www.outdoorhub.com/news/video...s-moose-glock/
Seems pretty aggressive to shoot the Moose. Yes, Moose can be deadly, but there's no need to kill the animal.
Instead of approaching the animal closer, why not fire a couple warning shots in an attempt to scare it off?

This could have been avoided if the moose was carrying a weapon.

Did he leave the moose there to die a slow death? It looked like it was still moving.

This is the perfect example of a completely irresponsible person in the wild. He did everything wrong when approaching wildlife. When making noise did not work, he moved closer to the moose when he should have moved away.
He should have backed away before approaching. After the warning strike by the moose, he should have slowly backed away at that point as well.
This snowmobiler triggered the moose's aggressive response by his actions and should be charged for shooting this moose.

Canadian drive by?
Sure the animal was just scared, but it DID jump at him. I'd probably shoot it too. Adrenaline takes over and it's me or him at that point. Approaching it wasn't the right thing to do.

Can snowmobiles easily reverse? I think if the two could have backed up into a clearing where the snow isn't as high and gone around that area, it could have been easily avoided. I would imagine they have the ability to reverse, but I haven't been in one.
The guy did nothing right either way. He approached wildlife, made confusing and somewhat aggressive noises and then kept approaching.
EDIT - Do any of our local wildlife experts know if firing warning shots would scare the moose? It seems a bit quick to go for kill shots.

I'd be interested to know where this happened.
If it was in Canada, this guy could/should be in a whole lot of trouble for riding around on his snowmobile with a loaded handgun.
As for whether or not this guy deserves to be charged for shooting the moose, I'd say if this was in Alberta, where I know a little bit about the laws involved, he absolutely should be charged.
The guy had every opportunity to turn around and get out of the situation. I would say this is a pretty clear case of harassing wildlife, and thus he should be charged.

Hope this wasn't in Canada. If so, dood is going to be in a TON of trouble.
Regardless, this guy is an idiot. Should never have gotten closer. And he sure as hell should have stuck around to at least finish the job he started.
Terrible.

I hope it was in Canada then since he deserves all the trouble he gets.

I'm surprised a glock was so effective on a moose.

The problem with warning shots is the animals can't always determine the direction they are fired from. Say you shoot near them, the bullet hits a tree behind them, that is the last sound they hear and they run away from it...straight at you.
Another problem is you should never shoot, unless you know where the bullet will go. ricochets happen, people could be closer than you think without knowing, etc. A gun should be an absolute last resort.

I have not viewed the video, but would the noise of the snow machine not be loud enough?

No it didn't seem to affect the moose at all, and there were 2 snowmobiles.

I wonder if they have become accustomed to the noise.
Airhorn then would be a good option, I don't think they make bear scares for pistols.

He was looking to make a kill, he had lots of options to avoid and I don't feel his life was in jeopardy until he forced the issue.
I hate people like this for some reason.

Yeah as mentioned above, if this is Canada, the guy is in a whole ton of trouble. If you plan to bring a gun in that situation(not a very smart move to start with), you better make damned sure it is an unrestricted rifle.

So much wrong with this.
He didn't shoot in self defense as the moose charged, he shot after the moose backed away and wasn't presenting an imminent threat.
He left the moose injured instead of humanely finishing it off.
He moved closer to the moose when it wouldn't move instead of finding a different way around or turning back. He's in the back country, animals have the right of way there not humans.
Idiot and a poor example of a Canadian.
