oh i agree. the drug has been on the banned list for years and from a layman POV seems like there is a reasonable tolerance allowed in the IOC's drug test
it is up to the athlete to ensure that he/she is complaint with the drug policy

Apperantly, IOC knew this by wednesday, but didn´t tell the swedes until two hours before face off. That, and not the fact that the rules are foggy, are the issue for swedes right now. The fact is we lost against a better team, where Bäckströms appearance in the game probably wouldn´t have made a game changing difference.

Because I do enjoy the Finnish/Swedish rivalry, has there been any sabre rattling out of Finland to get bumped up to a Silver?

After the world championship in cross country skiing in Lathi, Finland, 2001, the finns have been quite quiet about doping ...
But no, not a word as of yet. The Latvian team didn´t loose their 8th place when Pavlov DID play, so Sweden probably can´t either.

According to TSN, IIHF rules are at least two players on a team have fail drug tests before a team is disqualified

sure, but that shouldn't stop the Finnish Don Cherry types from laying down a few comments that it should be one person and the whole team goes.

Well, those are the rules for other athletes (relay races, etc), so I could see the point...

If they knew Wednesday, why was he allowed to play in the semis?

I doubt they knew Wednesday. The sample was collected on Wednesday according to the press conference.
The claim by the IOC was there was a backlog at the drug testing lab and they couldn't get the results any sooner.
Pretty bush league IMO, cause if done in a timely manner the Swedes could have had the B sample tested to confirm or refute the first positive and settled the manner.
Having to suspend a player 2 hours before the biggest game of his life without any chance to appeal or get retested would suck for any innocent athlete.

The latest out of Sweden is that IOC now has appologized to the SOC for being late with the result.

Backstrom seems kind of innocent at first thought but given that he has taken the allergy pill everyday for 7 years you would think someone would have asked him if he was on any meds or he would volunteer that information to check compliance. Somebody wasn' careful enough.

The problem is not the Pseudoephedrine itself, but its use as a masking agent. http://list.wada-ama.org/list/s5-diu...asking-agents/
Frankly as my colleague at work (former Canadian national sprinter) says, failing a doping test at the Olympics is really just failing an IQ test. Sucks for Backstrom, but given the endemic nature of doping in Olympic sport, they are far tougher than the NHL. Could even be an administrative error on the Swedish team failing to get the paperwork sorted, or as likely there was a tip off by so he was selected "randomly".

But he was tested by the NHL and the IOC recently, and was tested in 2010 (all while taking the drug) and passed.
He wasn't hiding his allergy medication from anyone.

The more I learn about the circumstances the more I am pissed off for Backstrom.

Feel bad for him. Not only was he unable to play, but he has to take allergy meds daily!

Right. My point is at some point in time somebody must have told Backstrom it was a banned substance and given instructions etc. to ensure he doesn't exceed the allowed amounts. I assume this is a case of two pills within too short of a time period instead of say once every 24 hours and Backstrom was careless and unlucky and took another pill before the first left his bloodstream and got caught.
