Nicklas Bäckström tested positive for doping
Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet report that Nicklas Bäckström failed a doping test prior to the final. The substance was reportedly an allergy medicin containing pseudoephedrine, a banned substance both by Wadas and IOC.
According to the Swedish Olympic Committees Press Relations Manager Björn Folin the allergy medication is something that Bäckström has been taking regularly for about seven years.

An NHLPA source tells Yahoo Sports that Backstrom violated anti-doping rules after using an allergy medication. Some, like Claritin, contain pseudoephedrine, a banned substance by the IOC and the World Anti-Doping Federation

What is the possible consequences of this? Has something similar occured?

My guess is pseudoephedrine. It would be in lots of allergy medication
Edit: Didn't read the whole post

Plain allergy tablets like Claritin don't contain pseudoephedrine...you'd have to purposefully seek a combination tablet that does.

He was likely banned for the game and won't receive a medal.

I don't know how purposefully seeking out it is to pick claritin-D on the shelf beside regular Claritin. Maybe the packaging was in Russian? Either way though, he should definitely been aware and known better.

It's just so sloppy. The team/doctors/Bäckström should know what medication (even if it's just allergy medication) that they're using. Jizees.

it didn't look like Backstrom was out there to even receive a medal, so the report may be true

Wait for the facts to get out but remember when the chiropractor was caught with steroids and stated he had given banned substances to capital players? Coincidence....

@reporterchris: Swedish officials confirm Backstrom tested positive for a banned substance. Believed to be allergy medication. Press conference to come.

So if he was banned does he not get the medal? Rough deal, but even worse if they were to have won

Going by the Latvian player standard:
Backstrom will not get a medal.
The IOC will demand Backstrom's failed test appear on his IIHF records.
The IIHF will decide on supplemental punishment.
Whether it was accidental or done in ignorance, the onus is on the athlete to control what goes in his body.

You wonder how many others get caught doping during the NHL season, but cover up using the same excuses - migraines, fever, strained groin. When they said migraine for Backstrom on this one, it was a WTF moment that he'd miss a gold medal game, but somebody floated it out there and it would have worked.

Don't think the NHL tests for or cares about Sudafed doping. This is an IOC thing.
