Default Time Zones

Came across this recent article about the different time zones in the world and how their clocks compare to the actual positioning of the Sun.

http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_world...the_world.html

Quote:
It shows the difference between clock time and “solar time”—a schedule in which the sun is at its highest point in the sky at exactly 12 noon.

For whatever reason, more of the world seems to be a little bit like Spain—the sun rises and sets later in the day than it should—than the other way around. The "late" places are shown in red, the "early" places in green. The deeper the shade, the more off the time is.

Spoiler!

Difference between solar time and clock time is only half of the equation. What's really matters is where social time cues (e.g. school, work, meals, TV, last call at the pub, etc.) fall relative to solar time, so where they fall relative to clock time is important too. For example, lunch doesn't have to be noon - that's just a cultural convention.

Apparently I'm living on solar time. Cool.

I was reading up about this stuff a few months ago (probably when we last changed our clocks), and was surprised to see that Calgary should be in the Pacific time zone, and Saskatchewan is almost perfectly positioned to be in the Mountain time zone.

Also, holy crap, we're only two weeks away from daylight saving time again.

Sometimes, in the winter, I don't see the sun much.

I go to work when it's dark out, and I come home when it's dark out...

The lighter the grey, the better.
