Speed Skating Canada officials, knowing what a force Mr. Morrison is in the 1,000-metre, approached Mr. Junio on Monday night and asked him whether he would consider stepping aside. There was no debate.
It was an easy decision, Mr. Junio said. “I wanted to see him skate this 1,000-metre.”

Just putting it out there - does it matter if it was his decision? If he was approached by the coaches, how could he say no?

In this article he talks about considering giving up his spot all the way back to the moment Morrison missed out on qualifying.

I second that. My next choice would be Shannon Szabados.

How about the gold medal winning goal scorer for the womens team? Or the Womens goalie.

If Bilodeau is already home then I would definitely support the Dufour-Lapointe sisters, Humphries and Moyse or Morrison or Junio. It's pretty hard to go wrong...

ie: Humphries & Moyse

Marie-Philip Poulin for sure, albeit a team sport she really came through when it counted.

Jennifer Jones and her curling team. To go undefeated is quite a feat.

Yes, Jamie Salé and David Pelletier in 2002.

I actually had a feeling Speed Skating Canada was going to do this after Morrison's spill at Nationals. But I assumed they were going to ask one of the other skaters to step aside. Gil is generally regarded as up and coming.

For the summer Olympics there was also a rowing pair whose names I'm too lazy to look up.

McBean and Heddle! Why would you have to look that up?

I like the Junio story and all, but I don't think he deserves to be flag-bearer because of it. It's something to be proud about as a Canadian, but aren't the games are about winning gold medals? Not about selfless acts by good dudes?
Bilodeau or Humphries/Moyse IMO. Or even Denny Morrison.
Where was Junio expected to place in the 1000m btw? Can't find the answer in any articles.
