February 21 General Thread
A great day for Canada in team sports, winning Gold in a thrilling Women's Hockey game as well as Jennifer Jones' rink in the Curling final. Today will be a busier day, full of more team sports, speedskating, and freestyle skiing.
Rankings after Day 14: Rank / Medals / Rank Change
By Gold Medals: 5th / 7 / +2
By Total Medals: 5th / 20 / 0
Events of Note:
[12:45 AM, 2:30 AM] Freestyle Skiing – Ladies’ Ski Cross: Marielle Thompson, Georgia Simmerling, and Kelsey Serwa will try to medal a day after Brady Leman finished 4th. Thompson is 1st in the world this year and is a medal favourite. Simmerling has finished 6th three times this year, and Serwa, who was 5th at the Olympics in Vancouver, has struggled this year since recovering from an ACL tear.
[5:45 AM, 9:15 AM] Alpine Skiing – Women’s Slalom Runs 1 & 2: Marie-Michele Gagnon has had a terrible Olympics, but the Slalom is her best event. Despite injury, she will try one more time to make the podium. Erin Mielzynski and Brittany Phelan also compete.
[6:30 AM] Curling – Men’s Gold Medal Game: Brad Jacobs will take on David Murdoch in a battle for gold. Will Jacobs be inspired by Jennifer Jones? Canada’s “Hey Sup Bro?” curling team will do their best to win. If they win gold, the after-party will feature both Molson and House music.
[6:30 AM] Speed Skating – Men’s Team Pursuit Quarterfinals & Semifinals, Ladies’ Quarterfinals: The Men’s team (ranked 6th) will be in tough versus the United States, who have placed 2nd in two of the three world cup events. The Ladies will be up against the hometown Russian team, which improved their placements in every race so far this year.
[7:30 AM] Biathlon – Women’s 4x6km Relay: Canada is unlikely to medal.
[9:30 AM-11:18 AM] Short Track – Men’s 500m ¼, ½, Finals, Women’s 1000m ¼, ½, Finals, Men’s 5000m Relay Finals: Cournoyer and Jean will represent Canada in the 500m, Maltais and Drolet in the 1000m. Canada will be in Final B of the Men’s 5000m.
[10 AM] Hockey – Men’s Semi-Finals: Canada vs USA. There will be a separate thread for this game.

I think the men's curling team takes silver. This year looks like the reverse of 2010, with the women's team being completely unstoppable while the men have looked shaky. Don't know if I think the bro rink can pull it out when the pressure is highest

Thanks! Honestly, if it wasn't for the fact I've been spending the last two weeks packing, I'd have had significantly more in-depth summaries.

If we were facing Sweden, I would've said I felt the same. But Murdoch blows it so much at the Olympics.
I think Team Jacobs will win, 6 protein shakes to 5 pounds of haggis. Tied after 9, Canada will have the hammer curl going into the 10th rep.

Ya, it will depend on how shaky they are out of the gate. They seem to have improved over the week, but Murdoch has a good team too. More so than usual, I think this one will come down to who makes the biggest mistake; there won't be a lot of wiggle room to recover from one.
Really like the team Canada curling shirts...gotta get me one of those.

Murdoch is really, really inconsistent which has always plagued him. There's also the issue that he hasn't played with this team very long - the British curling federation chose to take Murdoch plus what used to be Tom Brewster's team (with Brewster as the alternate). On the other hand, Jacobs and his team are as emotional as anybody in the game and haven't been tested a lot on the big stage.
It's kind of funny but the top three womens teams are probably all more consistent than any of the mens teams.

Quick question, why are these guys referred to as the "Bro team"?

Somebody posted something about them drinking protein shakes and listening to house music a few days ago and the joke stuck.

If I take anything from these games, it's a crush on Andi Petrillo.

She's not bad but Kathryn Tappen on NHL Network still wins it for me. The TSN's women's hockey panel with Natasha Stanizewski and Tessa Bonhomme are runners up.

A guy at my office who's a big curling fan can't stand these guys, but I think they're pretty funny. This is an actual quote from one of them:
“I think when we all walked in there, it felt like a good place to win a gold medal. The dressing room is a little tight, but we’re going to make it our own.
“We’re going to be pumping the house music as usual in there and having a good time and hopefully making a lot of shots.”
Hahaha, awesome.

Canadians Serwa, Thompson, and Simmerling in 1, 3, and 8 respectively after the seeding round for ski-cross. But a lot of women having trouble with this course even when they're the only one on it. It feels like injuries are going to be inevitable out there today, though I hope I'm wrong about that.

Im pretty nervous for these heats after watching the carnage that was the mens heats. Hopefully the Canadian girls keep it upright.

All three on to the quarter-finals.
Serwa and Simmerling will be in the same heat and will be in tough versus Fanny Smith.
