#Isles GM Garth Snow spitting mad over Tavares' Olympic injury: "Are the IIHF or IOC going to reimburse our season ticket holders now?"
Arthur Staple @StapeNewsday
More Snow: "It's a joke. They want all the benefits from NHL players in Olympics and don't want to pay when our best player gets hurt."

He has a point. Teams should be compensated for injuries.
I'm pretty surprised that the NHL has gone to 5 Olympics now and have never demanded this.

Garth Snow has a lot to be angry about these days, so it's not surprising. Kind of funny that he's the one that prevented Visnovsky from going (which should have been a medical clearance / doctor decision IMO), and now this happens.

Snow has a right to be ticked. His job is on the line - he doesn't care a rat's ass who wins gold.
JT getting injured is really the NHL's worst fears realized - and will give them the ammo to go back to the PA and put the discussion on the table.
Predictions: No NHL in Korea, and it is re-visited after that.

His job is on the line because he's put together a horrible team. If they were even close it would be another story. Tavares there or not there doesn't make them a playoff team.
Obviously it's a huge loss, but his resume will cost him his job, not Tavares' injury. The injury is probably more likely to help him keep it.

Well clearly.
But that doesn't mean that he doesn't have every right to be upset about losing his best best player for the rest of the season because he was off playing in an non-NHL tournament.

Well that I agree with, he has perfectly good reason to be mad.

Vanek is going to walk, and they gave up either a top 3 pick in 2014, or what is likely to be a very high pick in 2015. Just terrible. Unless they get something unreal for him at the deadline (they won't) this will be by far one of the worst trades to happen recently.
|
Pretty bad assumption to assume they won't get a great return for him this deadline.

Not sure I agree with that analysis. To me this looks like a good year to get a top 3 pick, and an okay year to get a pick in the 4-8 range.
The top 3 seem to be on another tier above the rest.
I think people toss the "weak draft" term around a bit too easily. Is it weaker than last year? Yep. Is it still looking a lot stronger than most of the weak drafts in the 90's and early 2000's? Yep.

Hockey gods ... we're owed.

I believe Craig Button thinks Eichel is below Reinhart/Bennett/Ekblad if I recall correctly from his last podcast. Just throwing that out there.
The top 3 in this draft are not as bad as some seem to think.

Weren't the Islanders ticked off that Okposo didn't make the US team? So they get to be mad when their players don't get picked, and also get to be mad when the one that does go gets injured. That's fun.

Whatever they get will be nowhere near as good as a top 3 pick and Matt Moulson.

Did you expect them to say they were glad their player wasn't selected?
NHL is lucky that this injury happened to the Islanders over say Kessel, Crosby, or stars of other teams that have playoff aspirations in big hockey markets.

Talk about counting your chickens before they've hatched. The Isles are not guaranteed to finish bottom 2-3 next year. It's pretty hard to be that bad as we well know. The pick could just as easily be a mid-first rounder which they may recoup this deadline.

I was talking about this years pick, although realistically they'll probably keep that. But next year they won't have Vanek or MacDonald, they still won't have a goalie and they'll probably have another high draft pick. Buffalo absolutely fleeced them in this trade, there is no way to defend it at all.

Snow blaming the Olympics, maybe he should be held accountable to the ticket holders for the mediocre performance as a GM

You sure are talking in absolutes about the uncertain future. Never know what a few roster changes and/or coaching changes could result in. Seems to me that the Avs went from bottom 3 to playoffs in one off season. Might as well wait a couple weeks and see what they get for Vanek no?

Well they will have given up Moulson and a 1st (likely in 2015) and their second in 2015, for a few months of Vanek in a year when they won't make the playoffs. I don't think the Islanders intentions were to flip Vanek at the trade deadline. So, in hindsight, this deal didn't work out for them very well at all. They could probably get a good return for Vanek at the deadline now, but the Sabres could likely do the same with Moulson. Hard not to say that this backfired on the Isles and that the Sabres walked away looking like they fleeced Snow.

the Isles were a playoff team last year, why can't they be again next year? There is no guarantee next years pick will be a high pick, plus they will get a very good return for Vanek.
You shouldn't blindly speculate.
