Seattle group is going to Vancouver to learn more about the NHL:
http://seattletimes.com/html/hockey/...tle20xml.html#
Quote:
Local sources have said the league has held discussions with potential ownership groups here about what the fee would be to land an expansion franchise to begin play in the 2015-16 season. Reports last summer had pegged it at $275 million, but sources now say they expect the price to be somewhere between $200 million and $250 million.
Any league expansion would likely involve a second team to balance the schedule. Potential expansion sites besides Seattle include Quebec City, Kansas City, Portland, the Toronto suburb of Markham, Saskatoon and Las Vegas.
Among those candidates, Quebec City is furthest along, having already begun construction on a new arena and identified an ownership group led by media magnate Pierre-Karl Peladeau. Unlike Quebec City, local officials insist a new arena deal be contingent upon the league first awarding Seattle an expansion franchise.

If I was Seattle, I'd be going to Detroit to learn how to run a decent club. As much as I hate the Wings, they're consistent, they play well, they scout like they have a Flying Delorean and they make a crappy, broke, run down city like Detroit a haven for hockey.. So glad they're out of the West now..
But yeah, Vancouver? like we need another team full of divers and whiners in the league.

I believe it was for actual advice on financially running a team considering the demographic is similar in the two places.
I don't think a city that doesn't even have a team yet is thinking about the draft.

Geoff Baker, who wrote the article, is a skilled at obfuscation and misdirection. A chamber of commerce trade visit to a neighboring city is not news.
The NHL apparently setting the expansion fee b/w 200M and 250M is.

If team ownership allows fans to choose a name, it will be b/w the Metropolitans and the Totems.
I'd vote for the Metros just because a. it is non controversial in a very politically correct world focusing attention on hockey and b. the historical significance of the name that is on the cup twice with the added benefit that the 100 year anniversary of the original's team founding is in 2015.

A team named the Metropolitans and a division named the Metropolitan?

Good call, actually. Seattle's Superbowl riot was pathetic. They need to observe Vancouver to learn how to do it right!

Sure, why not? It makes about as much sense as having two teams named the Roughriders in a 8 team league and it seemed to work for decades.
The Metropolitan division is meaningless and has no context. They might as well have called it the Patrick or the Acela division and it would have made more sense.

I quickly skimmed the thread and didn't find anyone talking about it so I'll ask.
In the event of an expansion, how do they fill up an empty roster with players?

expansion draft
this was how it worked last time.
Quote:
26 of the 28 teams existing in the league at the time of the draft were each allowed to protect either one goaltender, five defensemen, and nine forwards or two goaltenders, three defensemen, and seven forwards. The Atlanta Thrashers and Nashville Predators had their entire rosters protected, as they were the two newest franchises in the league, only being in existence for one and two years respectively.

At an unannounced time, Gary Bettman appears in the Flames dressing room flanked by Seattle management on both sides. Our coaches & trainers scramble to throw themselves in front of our best and most valuable players. After the commotion, Bettman and his Seattle cronies sigh and look around the dressing room to see who's left that's not being pushed into a closet or stuffed in an equipment bag. Stempniak is sitting there, staring back at them.

This becomes the time the smart GMs get their rosters in order so they don't lose anything valuable like their next franchise goalie.
