Well I know the NHL wasn't going to Korea anyway, but that's certainly a nail in the coffin of future Olympics trips.

The players and fans like it, the owners (understandably) do not. However, ultimately the owners need to make the fans happy, and keeping the players happy isn't a bad idea either.

Wonder if this ever ends up in a collective bargaining agreement.

Wow. Exactly this. Everything the owners/GMs/coaches are afraid of. Pretty brutal for Tavares.

This will be used by the owners to if nothing else get more compensation if they let their players go in 2018. But if you're Charles Wang, you just watched your elite, franchise player suffer a devastating injury and there is no guarantee he'll ever be the same player again. I can obviously see why they don't want their players involved in this. Will it actually be enough to prevent them going in 2018? We'll see.

Ironically had Claude Giroux made the team and this was him who suffered the injury then it might actually be the nail in the coffin of players going in 2018. Ed Snider hates the Olympics already so had his guy been the one who suffered this injury, I'd imagine he'd do everything in his power to stop them going in 2018.

Exactly. This pretty well ends any Flames hope (outside of a lottery win) of getting Ekblad as I expect the Islanders to nail down the 29th spot now. Kind of sucks to have your franchise flounder like this and not even get the opportunity to pick up elite prospects.

I guess any positives to take out is that this will hopefully put an end to NHL participation in the Olympics.

Pretty unlucky, hope he is able to fully recover. he was rounding into a true superstar, would hate to see injuries/surgeries deter that.

Interesting perspective, but that's a positive to a very select group of people.

Nothing interesting about being an NHL fan over an Olympic fan. I like the Olympics but more for the amateur athletes that bust their ass for four years while getting by with sponsorship and working daytime jobs in some cases. I would rather go back to a non-NHL team so the focus could be more on the amateur athletes chasing the dream over millionaire athletes stealing the limelight over the two weeks.

You do know the amateur requirement of the Olympics was dropped, by the Olympics, right?

They are all pro athletes some are just paid much better than others.

As undercover said, the amateur requirement was dropped. The NHL aren't the only professional athletes that participate in the Olympics, and even if the NHL stopped going, all the Euro leagues would still go, so it really makes no difference.

The "amateur" argument has no relation to the NHL.

Michael Phelps has a net worth of $55M.

Between the two of them, they stole the limelight of both the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics. Because they're millionaire athletes would you exclude them from the Olympics in favour of "amateurs" with day jobs?

What if a millionaire oil executive participated in the biathalon or something? What about Shawn White and other professional athletes? What about the people in the Equestrian riding in the Summer games? They all have to be rich to participate in that "sport".

Just because 1000's of people watch an NHL hockey game and only a few people watch world championship luge, does not mean that hockey players have any less of a case for playing in the olympics. They are at the pinnical of the sport. Just like the top lugers, bobsledders, etc... The fact that they make less money doing their sport outside of the olympics really has nothing to do with it.

I wouldn't mind seeing NHLers not go anymore. I like the idea of a best on best tournament every year or two - but that can be achieved with something like the World Cup.
I hate the break during the NHL season.

We were gonna finish ahead of them anyway! Their rebuild has been longer than the One to the north. Bad GMs and owners in both cities.
