If there are no teddy bears and flowers, then probably no.

I do this all the time, while yelling "Alohomora" at the top of my lungs. I'm pretty sure that's the only way to get them to work.

Hopefully this was a short sighted drunk post. If not. Yikes.

I have never fully understood why people care what happens to their memory or remains after they die. I could be accused of horrible crimes against humanity, and people could use my remains as kitty litter or filler for McDonalds food after I die for all of the difference it makes to me.

^ I'd like to be thrown out into the wilderness to be devoured by whatever, if anything. At least I'd be serving a purpose.

Well your legacy is really the only thing you have as a record you were here (aside from children, I guess but that's why the carry the family name).

But more importantly.

I find the way we treat and mourn/celebrate (not sure if that's the right word) death in North American culture odd to begin with, but that's besides the point. I'll preface this whole thing by saying that everybody needs to mourn in their own way, and sure I get that, and whether or not I agree or understand is technically irrelevant.

However the roadside tributes just bug me. And it's only done for vehicle deaths. If someone has a heart attack at McDonalds, mourners don't strap a teddy bear to the table they were sitting at and then leave it there to weather. Die in a ski accident, they might name a run after you or have a plaque at the hill, but there's not flowers right at the spot in which the victim was buried in the avalanche.

There's the argument that it makes other people aware of the dangers of driving. Maybe. In which case I prefer the way Montana handles it, with a small white cross at the location.

Random stuff on the side of the road doesn't seem like much of a memorial or tribute to a person to me. Nor does marking the spot that the death occurred (at least in the case of car accidents).

How do you feel about people placing flowers at the "small white cross" in Montana?

Well I'm not a fan of the cross to begin with, but have I never seen them "decorated". Frankly they bug me too, but to a lesser extent. Just playing devils advocate for the driver awareness argument that may crop up.

I was curious if those crosses were placed by the State so I looked it up. I recall seeing them when I was kid - went down to my grandparents through Montana a couple of times.

Ha, even better when the cashier then looks at the receipt with the 0 tip and suddenly the quality/happiness of the service goes down. So many places downtown do this now. I don't tip the cashier at Safeway or Co-op when I go, so why the F would I tip the lady who hands me a styrofoam container for me to scope my chinese take out in?

Speaking of roadside memorials, does anyone remember the "Fatality" signs Edmonton used to put up at their intersections?

Now saying that they will not allow liquor to be served before 8AM because it may encourage people to stay out all night drinking. Seriously, are we THAT redneck here?
