@sportspickle: Nice of Putin to let Finland's players leave the ice first before opening fire.

Tough luck Ilya.

Nyet, nyet, Soviet.
If the other quarterfinals go as expected, the two semifinals will be rematches of the last two gold medal games.

Can we kill the talk of moving to Olympic-sized ice and contracting teams to open up the game in the NHL? These Olympics have All-Star teams playing on the big ice, and they've been just as trappy and low-scoring as the NHL - if not moreso.

Actually, now that I've thought about it, if Canada and the US win, the semifinals will be rematches of the last three gold medal games.
Except for Latvia, all of the remaining teams have played for the gold medal in the NHL era.
It's also interesting that the Soviet Union/Unified Team won gold in 8 of the 10 Olympic hockey tournaments they participated in (their only losses were in the two games hosted in the US and won by the US), but Russia has not won since the Soviet break-up.

Someohow, I knew Russian hockey will be medalless in these Olympics right off the beginning. Can't explain the feeling, but there was no doubtin my mind that they will be eliminated in the 1/4-finals.

Oddly I thought the same thing. Their defense is probably the worst I've ever seen Russia ice since NHLers started playing in the Olympics.

Wonder what all those media pundits who picked the Russians to win the gold because think of their choice now? Until the excessive political interference goes away, Russia will remain in the hinterland in Olympic hockey. Oh, and they also need some defensemen too. And forwards that actually want to put the work in to win.
I love it!

A Canada-Finland final would be great, although 4 years too late (why did Kipper have to have such an awful semifinal?).

It actually wasn't as mismanaged as last time, the players just didn't get it done. Granted, a couple of really dumb moves like having Popov playing with Malkin and Ovie, and we saw far too much Belov. But overall, if you're the Ruskie coach, can you do much different? If you're picking the team, can you do much different? It's on the players.
And let's be real, Finland played outstanding hockey. They gave up next to nothing. We saw what they can do against Canada, and they just did it again. What's the difference between FIN-RUS and FIN-CAN a few days ago? A power play goal and a bad defensive mistake. Put any other team across from the Fins today, and they have a good chance to grind out a win.
Finally, can we show some love for the play of goalie Bob? He was amazing in that third period. His team couldn't do anything in front of him but he made some ridiculous saves late to keep it at least sort of close. Had they started him, who knows what happens... but I don't really blame them for starting Varlamov, because before the game there wasn't much to choose between them. I'm a bit worried about Canada making a similar wrong choice...

That would be the perfect final, actually. Canada wins, or Selanne goes into the sunset with a gold medal.
Also, sort of amused at the irony of people suddenly cheering for the Czech Republic.

Coach Bil of Russia says he can't explain top players not scoring - especially Ovechkin, coach singles him out

Kesler finishing 4th instead of winning a silver would have been a better result.

I'm glad Russia was able to prove KHL superiority with their excellent showing at the Olympics..... Oops!
Seriously, any team with Belov as a top-6 defender is going to suck - hi Oilers!
