HockeyIllererite's idea of only having a handful of host cities makes a lot of sense to me........

I don't think that anywhere in Africa will be able to host, at least not for a very long time. They just don't have the resources or economy

We have closer, Canadian, and arguably better cutters just west of us to utilize.
I hazard they weren't sought to bid, as FIS is a bunch of toolbags.
Comparing FIS & ASA budgets, is hilarious.

Sure, that's why you'd put it in the West Village instead.

Would it ever be feasible to put a high speed train out to Banff?
You'd have to expect it would get like 80% of the air tourism traffic. Current shuttle rates are about $60/person. Presumably a 15-20 min ride to banff would be preferred over a Shuttle. Tourism stats say 3-4 million people visit Banff each year. People who fly in is definitely some small fraction of that. Anybody know?
Clearly an Olympics bid is a good excuse to build awesome stuff like this.

You could potentially do a Winter Olympics in Chile or Argentina, but it would have to be held during Summer in the Northern Hemisphere.

It would be more realistic and I feel it would have a have a higher utilization per KM than a number 2 corridor train would. I'm sure it would be cheaper too, but not cheaper on a linear scale since the terrain is not as flat.

I guess it depends how you define "Summer," but I was thinking more like early to mid-Fall in the Northern Hemisphere (say, late September or early October), since there should still be snow around then in those areas. It would certainly make for an early winter Olympics for those in north of the equator though.

Why not? If somewhere in South America can actually host them, it would be beneficial to do it during our summer when the NHL would have no qualms about sending the players

Why not? The summer games range from mid-July to late-September depending where in the world they are being held.

The winter games have always began and ended in February since the 1968 games in Grenoble, France. Prior to that, the games have only started in late January just four times. It would be a monumental shift for the winter games to go into March.
The summer games in Seoul 1988 and Sydney 2000 ended in early October and that would be appropriate for the winter games in the southern hemisphere. Those dates would be beneficial for the NHL as those players would be ready for the start of the regular season.

While the change would be unprecedented in the Winter Games the IOC has showed a willingness to be more flexible with dates based on climate.
However, I don't think South America will even be considered for a games unless they they have athletes to participate.

I agree with the lack of athletes from South America. Perhaps Australia and New Zealand would be considered.

I'm not familiar with their geography, do they have mountains suitable to host?

Surprisingly they do in Austrailia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_of_Australia#Snow
I know many skiers who have traveled enjoy New Zealand.

Would definitely support a bid if they went that route. Especially if it helps us update our amenities! 38 years in between is a good enough gap. Definitely too close for Vancouver.
Crap, just realized how old I'll be then... Oh well, I'll still figure a way to party it up!

I would absolutely die of happiness if New Zealand won the Summer Games. That would be such an amazing, amazing location as a host.

I wouldn't wish the Summer Olympics on my worst enemy.
IMO Toronto/Canada is barely big enough to justify the facilities. Auckland/NZ (or Calgary/AB/Canada for that matter) is no where near big enough to justify the facilities required to host the Summer Games.
