Is it battling it out for ratings with the other sports stations in the city? They're the only sports game in town, if someone wants to listen to sports talk instead of music, they go there.
Having dull personalities who have no range isn't going to pull listeners from music stations.
Their NFL/MLB talk is a joke. I don't listen to CFL talk.

It is pretty simple, if you don't like it don't tune in. There are plenty of options online and with apps like TuneIn Radio where you can listen to basically any station in the world.
I listen to the Fan960 to news about our local teams. If you want more, use the technology that I am sure we all have and listen to something else that provides more details on the NFL or MLB.
I liked listening to Leslie and Pat each afternoon, there are slots that are much more boring than theirs on the Fan.

Most of which was actually spearheaded by Walker, hence why he is now in Toronto and we are surrounded by one trick ponies. Since he has left, their coverage of other sports has fallen off the map.
Steinberg has trouble talking about anything that isn't hockey or MMA. He simply doesn't care for it. Boomer can only talk Hockey.
Also last year was probably the first time they really stressed baseball because of all the moves the Jays made. Before that it was really lacking. They still can't attract guests who can even speak intellegently on the NFL..

I know some people don't care for it, but Steinberg is very knowledgeable about the CFL and writes for CFL.ca.

Steinberg loves football more than hockey.
And, yes.. the NBA morning coverage is exactly the way I want it.

My memory is a bit sketchy, but I seem to remember the ramping up of Jays talk the minute Uncle Ted's crew from Rogers put their Sportsnet moniker on the 960 station.

To be honest I can't stand the afternoon show, even more so since they got rid of hockey central at noon (Toronto) and added hockey central at noon (Calgary). We didn't need another hour of repeat from the same two afternoon guys. It was nice to have a different opinion, even if it was from Toronto. I more or less quit listening to the afternoon show when Kerr left. I now listen to music or my iphone unless there is breaking news. Maybe others feel the same way and their ratings dropped leading to the removal of Ryan. Was there any explanation on the show this afternoon.
I really enjoy the mornings with Rhett, not sure why his renewed contract is only 3 days a week. I now don't listen Monday or Friday.

The bolded shows why they don't talk more about NFL/MLB.
Much like you don't listen to CFL talk, many in Calgary don't care about NFL talk, and many don't care about MLB talk.
So they focus on the one thing that the majority of people in Calgary want to talk about : Hockey.
And their NFL/MLB talk isn't a joke, they actually bring in decent analysts to talk about those sports. They just don't do it that often.

I'd willing to bet just as many care about the NFL as the CFL in this town, and they're the rights holders for the Blue Jays, get someone that can talk about them.
Not enough happens in hockey to talk about it for 9 hours a day. It's ridiculous.

While I agree, it's what makes sports radio sports radio. The goal should always be to present the polar opposite opinions in order to generate discussion and I think he did a good job of that.
Living in the Lower Mainland I don't often get to hear 960, but the odd time I tuned in, Leslie did a good job.

As others have mentioned the afternoon show has never been the same since Kerr left. Leslie was a big upgrade on his predecessor but that still didn't bring the quality up to the days of Kerr/Steinberg.

I thought Kerr was great with guests, but I found him kinda rude and short with his co-hosts. He'd often cut people off and dismiss their points as they were making them.

I hate the NFL/NBA, yet when I listen to Mike Richards on TSN, those are the segments I like the most, because I don't know enough about those sports and they speak to it with a perspective that educates me and gets me interested. It was like that when he was on 960 too.
On 960, they basically mail in those segments with the bad reception phone call to some expert where they ask the standard surface/buzz of the week questions that guys who watch 1-2 games a week would ask and get the usual vanilla answers. I learn nothing from it and have no connection.
If they had guys who could deliver intelligently on NFL/NBA, then they wouldn't need to focus 98% on NHL or face losing ratings.
Steinberg does know his CFL, but I can only read his stuff. On air, he repeats and is all over the place. At least in print, someone has edited it into a coherent piece of analysis.
Edit: I don't want to sound like I'm bashing Steinberg. The guy is passionate and probably puts in twice as many hours at work than most people here. He definitely busts his hump and is doing okay, but he's like Baertschi. Could probably use some time in a small town to develop some polish under a program director that is hard on his people and develops them with tough love to hone their craft. Instead, he's cutting his teeth in a major market under Kirsh who doesn't have the chops to mentor on air people, so all his warts get magnified.
