February 16 General Thread
Denny Morrison had a fantastic race to grab a bronze in the 1000m yesterday, a distance that was not one of his best. Today, Canada will look to Snowboarding for its' best medal shot. Brad Jacobs will be jockeying for position to guarantee himself a spot in the playoffs, and the Ice Dance and Bobsleigh competitions begin.
Events of Note:
[10 PM] Curling – Men’s: #3 CAN (5-2) vs #6 USA (2-4). Jacobs’ rink, having won four in a row, needs to keep the streak going versus the Americans to guarantee themselves a shot in the playoff.
[11 PM] Alpine Skiing – Men’s Super G: Jan Hudec, Erik Guay, Manuel Osborne-Paradis and Morgan Pridy attempt their hand at another alpine course. Guay and Hudec are our only medal hopefuls, both with the ability to be in the top 10. ***BRONZE MEDAL***
[12 AM, 2:15 AM] Snowboarding – Ladies’ Snowboard Cross: In one of the more exciting events, Canada will look to Maelle Ricker (2010 Gold Medalist, #7 in the world this season) and Dominique Maltais (2006 Bronze Medalist, #1 in the world since the Vancouver games). Seeding round begins at 12 AM, with the Quarters/Semis/Finals all happening in quick succession at 2:15 AM. ***SILVER MEDAL***
[3 AM] Cross-Country: Men’s Relay 4x10km: Canada is one of 16 teams in this event, but with Harvey and Kershaw pulling out of the event due to ski wax issues, Canada is not expected to compete here.
[3 AM] Curling – Women’s: #1 CAN (7-0) vs #10 USA (1-6). In one of the biggest surprises of the curling competition, the Americans have only managed to win 1 game despite being considered the 5th or 6th best team. With Jennifer Jones having 1st place locked up with a victory here, they will look to more important matches, as there is a three-way tie for 3rd between China, Great Britain, and Switzerland.
[7 AM] Speed Skating – Ladies’ 1500m: Four Canadians will be competing in the 1500m. Schussler has top 10 potential, but it will be once again up to the struggling Christine Nesbitt in her best distance the last three years.
[8 AM] Biathlon – Men’s 15km Mass Start: Competitors not listed, currently. More information later.
[8 AM] Curling – Men’s: #3 CAN (6-2) vs #1 CHN (6-1). While on paper Canada is the better team, the Chinese team has had an excellent competition and will make for a tough match. With China likely guaranteed a spot in the playoffs, this is an important match to jockey for position.
[8 AM] Figure Skating – Ice Dance Short Dance: Three Canadian pairs will vie for medals in the Ice Dance competition. The likely gold battle is between Davis/White of the USA and Virtue/Moir of Canada.
[9:15 AM, 10:50 AM] Bobsleigh – Two-man Heat 1 & 2: Canada has three sleds in this 30 team event. All of our teams are capable of top 10 finishes but are not expected to medal.
[10 AM] Hockey – Men’s: FIN (2-0) vs CAN (2-0). The winner of this match is likely to be the #1 seed and move directly into the Quarter-Finals round if they win in regulation. Both teams have looked sharp, but Finland has been dealing with injuries throughout the week.
Other Events:
Men’s Hockey: Austria vs Norway (1 AM), Russia vs Slovakia (5:30 AM), Slovenia vs United States (5:30 AM).

Jacobs up 3-0 after 2 ends. USA is not very good at curling this year.

80 seconds is pretty short for a Men's Super-G.

Still 40, but only a few more that could actually contend.

There are no contenders left. Anyone who makes the podium now will be a shock.
Hudec and Miller tied for 2nd. 0.02 ahead of 4th
