^^^Totems? With leagues wanting to stay away from any type of linkage to aboriginal names I do not see Totems being accepted, will just start a controversy and the league can do without that.

Do they also steal the logo back from the Thunderbirds?

The Canucks have aboriginal totem style art in their logo, so do the Seahawks. Issues aren't with inanimate objects, especially if done tastefully, it's with names that are caricatures of of a people and a race.

I think Totems could be taken the wrong way by some though, that is what I am getting at. I personally don't see a problem with it, but I can see some that will, and think the league would think twice about it since we are living in this overloaded politically correct world of ours.

There is no problem with using totems as part of your uniform if done right, or any type of native works as long as you have consulted that heritage group. But using the name could be a whole other game and one I think the league would shy away from.

Plus as you say totems are tall inanimate objects, they don't move, easy to get around, don't think you want your team being compared to something like that!

how can totems be taken the wrong way? it refers to a totem pole, there is no other meaning that I can think of.

Hey guys I agree with you, I am playing devil's advocate here, all I am saying is that I can see some taking offence to the name. We all know how eager some people are to jump on this type of thing and cause trouble, Totems if not done absolutely right could be looked upon by some as making fun of a heritage, these people are the ones who would get the media attention and imo is reason enough for the league to not want to wade into those waters. Also how can you create a mascot that would be used that wouldn't poke fun at the name in some way, shape or form? Again, just playing devil's advocate.

No offense, but playing devil's advocate is usually kind of lame, but in this case it's especially goofy, as there's no way in hell there wold be controversy or offense taken to an a totem pole.

You think there's 40 NHL starters out there right now? That's pretty laughable.. look at Calgarys lineup every night, just terrible. Don't even want to think how terrible and expansion team or two would be.

The talent would distribute out fairly well. Games would be more or less the same as it is now.

I've read that as the quality of the players goes up, the scoring goes down. Look at the WHA era. Thus with expansion, we may see some increase in scoring, which wouldn't be bad.
