yes but if SOB is traded and we get anything for him, it's a win for us so we should consider that too

That wasn't my point. But I would much rather have O'Brien trying to make the best of it in the AHL than Sarich complaining about ice time in the NHL.

There are benefits to almost every deal. If the Penguins traded Crosby straight up for Mikhail Grigorenko, the Penguins get younger, bigger, and gain cap room. But open your eyes and this deal would be #### in every way.
It's about the right deal that makes sense and getting value and to do that you got to properly evaluate the return. O'Brien had two years left that pays him $2M dollars. That's #5 Dman money. If O'Brien can't fill that role the next two years for the Flames that's a poor deal. Sarich had one year left and given his experience he was easily tradable for a draft pick at the deadline and so was an asset. As for trading Tanguay for Jones, Tanguay is clearly still good enough to be a productive top 6 player, Jones clearly isn't.

We traded garbage for garbage. Not sure why this is even a debate.
Tanguay and his poor attitude stripped him of all trade value and you don't want someone like him around your developing prospects. I would rather have a less productive player with a good attitude than him.
Same goes for Sarich/O'Brien. Get the bellyaching away from the room, if it costs an extra year to do so, so be it.

I know you're being sarcastic but have you ever thought of writing speeches for Feaster?

Tanguay was not garbage. He is still a 2nd line player that will put up 50 points for the next couple of years at $3.5 million.
Not sure why Tanguay gets the "poor attitude" when all he said that he did not want to be on a rebuilding team. According to Millions so did Cammi. Quite frankly most veteran players that can play on the top 6 don't want to be on a rebuild team.
As for SOB saying the right things, thats because he believes he will be traded by the deadline. His attitude could quickly change if he can't be traded in the summer.
As far as i'm concerned, the only thing that can keep posters thinking the trade was a wash or win is that Tanguay has been injured most of the year. If he was healthy i have no doubt that he would be playing at a 50 + point rate and playing PK time with the Av's.

People still trying to defend the Tanguay/Sarich for scrubs deal? We got robbed, there's no debating that if you're sane.

That wasn't all he said. The Flames and their fans watched his production halt to roughly around 0 after Iggy and J-Bo split. To most people, including the Brass, that translates to pouting and speaks volumes. When that happens, most teams offload that kind of effort as soon as possible, any day of the week.

Almost every veteran on the team played like hot garbage durring the Iggy trade other than Stajan. The only players that looked good were the youngsters.

Well you might think it's a great deal, but I try to throw away garbage rather than trade for more garbage.

Kind of makes you wonder why these 2 guys were signed in the first case? Moreover... in Tanguay's case, why give a guy with "pouting history" a 5 year contract?
IMO ... Tanguay didn't have negative trade value. He tanked his value after Iginla/Bouw left, but I still think we could have gotten something more than negative value.
Sarich ... never thought he was garbage. For games he wasn't playing, I thought he was still a good player (albeit sloooooow). SOB I have an irrational hate for so don't expect me to be rational about him

I am not defending the contracts they were given, I don't like either contract all that much, especially Tanguay's.
As for Tanguay I don't think there were many takers, even less that he would be willing to go to. No team want'ed to take on 3.5 million for multiple seasons with the CBA uncertainty at the time.
Sarich, I liked alot. But him complaining every off season about playing time is a huge red flag. He wasn't going to waive him NTC to play for a team that wasn't going to give him playing time.

There seems to be some revisionist history happening here. Sarich was a huge whipping boy around here when he was a Calgary Flame for his weak attempts at clearing the zone and his skating style as if he were in quick sand.
But now, he used to be an adequate guy on the team.
He's had a good (maybe even great) season in Colorado, but that doesn't change who he was in Calgary.
But at the end of the day, the whole lot of players involved in the deal are overpaid guys with serious consistency issues. It was a change of scenery type of deal that could have worked out for the Flames, but didn't.
Regardless the outcome, I'm just glad Tanguay is off the team.

Tanguay is what 33, 34? How much value do people here think he had?
He can still play because his strengths are his IQ and playmaking abilities, but not like teams were going to throw us a golden bone for him. Softest and most invisible player that ever consistently put up points. But there are guys who can rack up points and there are guys that help you win. Tanguay falls under the former. Not much character, and much of the time I sensed a "meh" attitude about the games from him. And even when he claimed the losing bothered him, he'd rarely go out and do something about it on the ice.
Sarich was just scraps. The Avs are using him properly and so he's useful in his role, but like Tanguay, he wasn't exactly helping us win. He'd just throw a nice hit or two once in a while, but that's about it.

Sarich is playing respectable minutes on a playoff team. O'Brien can't even stick with a bottom four club.
So, wrong.

I'm not a Tanguay fan, and I can't say for sure the guy was a whiner or a cancer in the room.
I do know of a few stories ...
1) effort/attitude slip when Keenan reduced his ice time and tried to make him kill penalties
2) Regehr almost killed him after a game for not backchecking and blowing the zone without the puck. Suggested the team can't win with selfish players.
3) His attitude when Iginla was traded.
I think the Flames had a tough time gaining traction for 5 years under existing leadership. Iginla went out the door, and Tanguay was always attached to his hip. Giordano and Hartley have made mention carefully about optional skates, and setting the example this season ... all of which makes me think Tanguay was part of that "if those vets aren't going to do it than either am I" mentality that had the Flames floundering for a half decade.
I think he needed to go.
I don't think this team would be so consistent to show up as they are this season if guys like him were still around.
If the NHL book was tight on Tanguay, he was likely a hard guy to move.

Anytime the team is trading a player with a NTC fans should lower their expected return. If you can't access the entire market then it's unlikely you will get the best deal. It's even worse when that player is playing poorly or has a bad attitude.

I don't think anyone her is arguing that Tanguay and Sarich didn't need to go. There seems to be two camps where some posters simply feel that getting rid of them for anything was a good move where some posters such as myself feel you don't take on someone's garbage just to get rid of your own because it doesn't smell any better. Burke specifically mentioned that he didn't think Feaster got good value from his trades and that's why Feaster was fired. Sometimes you just got to hold onto your cards and wait and see if a market materializes.
A comment about optional skates... I think optional skates/practices are made optional for a reason. Skating in them doesn't prove anything and some like to have that extra practice and some don't. Players are very well-conditioned nowadays and players should first and foremost take care of their body. Plenty of veterans do not take part in optional practices because rest does more good for them. Tanguay is not a young player and he has a history of missing games due to injury. If anything, I wouldn't want a coach who expects his veterans to take part in optional skates.
