The Blue Jays almost finalized trades that would've seen them acquire Ian Kinsler from the Rangers and Brett Anderson from the Athletics earlier this winter, but both deals ended up as "near-misses," Sportsnet's Shi Davidi reports.

Kinsler, of course, was part of the offseason's biggest blockbuster to date, when he was traded to the Tigers in exchange for Prince Fielder and $30MM. Before that deal occurred, however, the Jays' proposed swap for the second baseman fell through due to Kinsler's partial no-trade clause that allowed him to block deals to up to 10 teams.

The Jays had long been rumored to be suitors for Anderson and they discussed a trade with the A's that would've sent Sergio Santos to Oakland in return for the southpaw. Anderson's extensive injury history, however, ended up dimming Toronto's interest and Anderson was instead traded to the Rockies in December.

The Toronto Blue Jays lackluster off-season has many fans feeling a little malaise and skeptical on the cusp of pitchers and catchers breaking camp next week. However, could Alex Anthopoulos and his Blue Jays brain trust score two of the biggest pitching free agents on the market as the clock strikes midnight? The Jays have played the waiting game all off-season, gambling and hoping that the asking prices on both Ervin Santana and Ubaldo Jimenez would drop due to the draft pick compensation attached to both hurlers.

I have heard that the contract demands for both pitchers has come down in both dollars and term.

I don't blindly put my trust in anyone, but I definitely trust that AA leaves no stone unturned. With him we're in capable hands.

There appears to be some movement in the pursuit of Ervin Santana, but the Toronto Blue Jays aren’t the ones driving the sudden turn in his market.

Things remain status quo with the Blue Jays, who have been patiently sitting back and waiting for a buying opportunity to arise for either Santana or fellow free-agent starter Ubaldo Jimenez.

For the moment, no moves from them appear imminent.

Heard on the radio this morning, there is the possibility (although unlikely), that Santana/Jimenez wait to sign until after the MLB draft this spring. Would be a way around the draft pick attatched to their names, and open up more bidding on their services.

But say they decide to sign in July, and as a result get 5 year terms with the last 4 years worth what they want, and a prorated amount for half the season for this year.

Do teams have to give up draft pick compensation in next years draft?

Maybe they see this as a way to get a 4 and a half year deal for 65 million vs the 4 year deal for 40 million that are being offered right now.

If the Jays don't sign Drew + Ubaldo/Santana, then they should just look at rebuilding. The Yankees, Red Sox, Rays, and Orioles all look better at the moment. If we are looking like a last place team before one pitch has been thrown, they might as well sell off all the high end assets for a bevy of top prospects and wait.

If the Jays go forward with another re-build, attendance at the home games will be almost bare.

Next step IMO is to Fire AA.

Well that's just it. I don't know enough about the draft pick compensation rules to know one way or the other. Their agents may feel that the draft pick compensation is keeping teams from bidding on them and therefore driving the market value down because certain teams won't bid now. For guys like Santana and Jimeniz, they may feel that now is their time to get that 5 year deal vs. a 3 year deal. So a 3 year 39 million dollar deal is more per year, but they might want the security of a 5 year 55 million dollar deal.
