Yikes, a text.
(Now, no idea how their relationship goes, but to me, a text is kind of how you tell a friend, not a parent)
yeah, I'm not thinking they're really close. With the background I have read, that's not at all surprising. It says in the article that Jr stays with friends when he goes back to Texas, not family.
He's always going to have that stigma attached to his name. He won't be known as a great football player, it'll always be, "the gay football player".
This is one of the more disgusting things I've read on this forum.
He should and does not have to accommodate who he is to others. It's those around him who need to change their views. He has no responsibility about the feelings and attitudes of anyone but himself.

Like it or not, it's probably true. Ideals are just that...reality is much harsher.

It doesn't mean we have to accept them. Society is a fluid notion, and the oppressed deserve to be stood for.
It's like the argument against gay couples adopting children; the idea that it's not fair to the child as they'll be bullied and alienated. Ridiculous. Accepting that is punishing the victim and appeasing the bigots.
To be fair to BBQorMILDEW, I don't think he was stating that as his personal opinion. I believe he was stating that was likely to be societies reaction.
Yes it's rediculous that society can't look past sexual orientation, but you can't change people over night. There are still people who judge based on race and that has arguably been in the spotlight longer than homophobia.

so many bible thumping rednecks are jumping on him and the media for calling him a hero for coming out.
I shut em down by saying a few things
1. Have you been divorced?
2. Have you had pre-marital sex?
3. Only one person has the right to judge him and it's none of us
If you said yes to 1 or 2 you're just as bad of a sinner as he is suppose to be. Simple fact is that we say he's wrong for being gay and it's a sin but we break the rules all the time, fact the south buys more porn than anywhere in the country, the south has the highest teen pregnancy rate..

Just ignore the bible thumpers, most of the time they're selective readers anyways.
I wouldn't even bother debating them on the subject. Its just like the awkward pauses during coffee with my old man when he goes on some rant or another, I just calmly sip my coffee, check out the cute girl in the mini skirt and they eventually get the hint and move on.
You give people power when you debate them on something that they're never going to change their mind on.
In terms of the kid, I'm not sure I'm crazy about him letting his dad know by text. IF they were somewhat close, its almost as bad as dumping a girl by mail. If they weren't well they were still close enough that there was communication happening, he could have made the effort to do it verbally.

I think that this is a really difficult issue for pro-sports in general and its not exactly about tolerance. I played sports for years (and still do), and I have no idea but would guess that someone on one of my teams was/is gay. It makes no difference to me. The thing is that we separate men and women on the basis of sex and certainly sexuality; so the homosexual issue seems like a gray area. There are a lot of people, not homophobes, who might be uncomfortable having gay people in the locker room based on the potential sexual connotations. I don't know that this means they're homophobic or discriminating though? Is it a question of maturity, where a guy could say "I don't want someone checking me out in the shower", or is that a level of personal comfort that is to be expected?
I hope that this comes across as intended, which is to say that I don't have any issues with gay people whatsoever, but I can see the potential issues it could cause for a franchise. I'm not sure how that should be dealt with because the other side of the coin is that you undoubtedly have gay people who are fantastic athletes.

Of course it doesn't, nobody suggested we had to. However, given the context, history, and probable progression of society it is quite likely that his name will always come with this attachment. As the first possibly open gay NFL athlete he is clearly not what is considered the 'norm' for that sport, and thus he will be categorized and labeled accordingly.
Not saying it's my preferred perspective on how he should and will be perceived, but I'm attuned enough to culture to make an educated guess on how it will play out.

There will probably be more after Michael Sam.
I hope more men and women have the same courage to take the stand and allow this issue into public discourse. Even so, like Robinson, chances are good that Sam will be recognized in history as a groundbreaker on a social issue, not necessarily for his accomplishments and accolades on the field.
Again, not advocating for this to be the case.

People are highly selective over what constitutes a sin when they are the ones committing it. Evidently only certain parts of God's word are open to interpretation and meant to act as a guideline. Hardcore Christians with tattoos always give me a chuckle.
