No one is giving them participation ribbons. I'm sure you've been told this before but there is no need to be so insufferable.

People who finish 40th at the Olympics, have more dedication, commitment and level of physical ability than you would could ever dream of having while you sit in your chair all day getting fat and criticizing them.

I'm sure they go to sleep well knowing they finished 40th but can beat a random internet forum member at their sport.

If you talk to these athletes they have a very good gauge of where they rank around the world. If they PB'd or got a near PB at the olympics I bet they are very excited. If they didn't perform to expectations or made a costly error then they will be mad at themselves.
The mindset of the Athletes is very different from an average person. So I bet lots of the people finishing 40th sleep very well and some of the people finishing 5th don't.

Didn't Alex Beaulieu-Marchand who just won gold have his Olympic career start several Olympics ago with a "bottom of the pack" result? They mentioned it last night on the news; I don't recall if it was him or one of the other gold medal winners.
Just saying that sometimes qualifying for the Olympics is the victory, and can lead to the athlete improving him/herself later on.

I definitely appreciate the effort/talent of anyone who makes it to the Olympics, and support their efforts while they are participating. The guy who comes in last place is still one of the best in the world (just like any scrub we make fun of in the NHL could school any of us on the ice).
Having said that, I'm glad programs like Own the Podium have started raising expectations in terms of results. Yes, it takes hard work and dedication to get to the Olympics, but at some point, the results need to be there too. I remember in the 90s, Canada was a little too happy with just participating, and not really concerned about results. I'm glad that they've sharpened up the way they do things. We can still support all the athletes who go, but now we can also celebrate medals out of it.

People who attend presentations and leave the ringer for their phone on. It happens numerous times at every conference, seminar, or presentation. Someone's phone goes off, blaringly loud, and they act all shocked that it's happening. Then it will happen to someone else and they'll act just as surprised. Idiots.

Think about it this way - they are better at their sport than you or I can ever hope to be at anything we do in our entire lives.
