If you look at Canada's medal haul from Vancouver and take out all the sports that weren't in Calgary, the count would be 3 gold, 1 silver, 4 bronze. Half of those are in speed skating; 2 are in figure skating; one for 4-man bobsleigh; and men's hockey is the other.
So far this year, none of Canada's medals are in sports that were held in Calgary.

This shouldn't discount our achievments...I personally think its terrible how much attention Norway is getting for their program, but if you drill down you notice there are 23 medal opportunities in cross country/biathalon. It's a "classic", but its also their national sport; it's completely unsurprising that Norway has done as well as it has at the olympics with the medals skewed that way.
Also instead of complaining Own the Podium should arm every farm kid that can shoot with a pair of skis and change the hunting rules to give out tags that you can do it in the winter as long as you're on cross country skis when you make the shot.

Just watched Ron chat with the moguls team, and Alex said that he donates used skis and equipment to the Russians and Kazakhs because they don't usually have enough equipment to train with.

I heard that Alex Bilodeau once deflected an asteroid that was 600m in diameter and headed straight for Mumbai.

It looks like they've already started. I just read this on the Toronto Star:
Quote:
If Quebec were a separate country, it would currently stand fourth on the Sochi medal table, tied with U.S. and Russia.
The six medals they’ve won in only four days here would already qualify as the 9th best total medal haul in Canadian Winter Olympic history.
After he won his medal in the mountains, Bilodeau was baited on this topic (by a British journo, natch). Did he realize how well Quebec could do here on its own?
Right when the rest of us really needed him, Bilodeau didn’t flinch.
“We’re proud to be Quebecer, but we’re proud to be Canadian,” he said. “Yes, we do a lot of good things in Quebec, but there are great things all across Canada.”
|
I like Bilodeau. Someone brought it up in another thread but it's worth bringing up again. I think he should be the flag bearer in the closing ceremonies.

I hope Team GB medals in both curling events so that Canadian journalists can ask about how "Scotland won twice as many medals as England".
What a ######-y question.

Here is a breakdown of athletes by province:
- Ontario – 64 athletes (29%)
- Alberta – 56 athletes (25%)
- Quebec – 43 athletes (19%)
- B.C. – 27 athletes (12%)
- Saskatchewan – 14 athletes (6%)
- Manitoba – 10 athletes (5%)
- N.W.T. – 2 athletes (1%)
- Nova Scotia – 2 athletes (1%)
- Newfoundland – 1 athlete
- P.E.I. – 1 athlete
- Yukon – 1 athlete
Ontario, Albert and Quebec make up 73% of the athletes we send to the games. I am really proud that there are so many Albertan's there. Obviously, a lot has to do with the facilities being located here. It is also great for Quebec to pulling far above their weight.
I don't have a problem with Quebec winning medals for the whole of Canada. I am sure there are some athletes with separatist tendencies, but for the most part, I think these people want to be part of Canada and represent this country as a whole. Anyone that wants to be a part of Canada I welcome as brothers. Everyone I've seen win have been over the moon excited, and I've seen them interviewed on CBC and they seem like genuine Canadians.
Also, one other thing to consider is these Quebec athletes spend a lot of time in Alberta and other parts of the world competing. I think it is easy for them to understand how great it is to be Canadian.

lol, it's cute that some Quebecers think they would have money to support athletes without the rest of Canada.
I guess there's always a way to ruin everything.
