The Russians are running away with the team event, and deserve the gold in my opinion.

The scandal will become greater in the ice dance competition, especially if the Americans stumble.

Canadian still to come after a dreadful opening run in the final.
I gotta admit watching the downhill this morning felt like a breath of fresh air. Just being able to watch an event where it's just all about speed, and not subjective marks.

I freaking loved watching the men's slope style to kick off the games, that was great (despite Canada underachieving a bit). And obviously the women's moguls was fun too, with the sisters finishing 1/2. But now with figure skating up today, I'm growing tired of all these judged events at the start. It's just not the same for me, I can't get into them as much as timed/racing events. I have too much of a built in mistrust of the judging process, probably stemming from the Sale/Pelletier debacle in '02.

Yulia Lipnitskaya is definitely the next it girl in figure skating. What a performance. And to think she's only 15.

Congrats to Canada on silver! That's a fantastic result and the team should be really proud of their efforts.

The scandal is for the real events later.

I agree..the slopestyle judging was so weird. When the last Canadian Parrot finished he thought for sure he was on the podium. Maybe even gold. Better than McMorris for sure. But he got 85 and 5th. To be anywhere between 94 and 85 in a sport is a ridiculously subjective range.

Even in bull riding if a guy finishes a ride and thinks he won. He'll win or maybe 2nd. But he wont be 5th.

Some people like to make fun of the Winter Olympics, saying they suck compared to the Summer games, but they definitely win in the "events that might kill you" category. Slop Style, most skiing events, luge, skeleton, etc.

I've never really been a fan of the "judging" sports. Might be because they're not especially huge back home and most people don't really know anything about them. It is fun to watch Twitter during the judging events though. There are a LOT of "experts" out there.

Canada wins the silver medal in the Figure Skating team event. Kind of a silly event imo but since Canada received a medal I'll let it pass.

How much do Canadian athletes receive from the government for winning medals this year?

The American pair in ice dancing had a world record score despite making a couple small mistakes

Seems like an excuse to give the Russians a guaranteed gold.

I think it's that I don't know enough, I have to trust the judges completely.

Obviously if someone falls on their ass I know they aren't getting a great score, but I can't differentiate between the 93 and the 96.5, or whatever.

Yeah, very much this. I can think that something looks amazing, and the judges completely disagree. Another part is that I've never, for example, been a snowboarder, so I have no personal experience about how difficult something is when I watch it on tv. I'm sure people who know how difficult something is to perform appreciate it more.

Ski jumping is nuts. What are they judging. I thought not dying was good enough.

Form and landing. But most points come from distance past a certain marker.

No, this is not a new event, just new to the Olympic Games. USA, Japan and Canada have been the traditional medal winners. The reappearance of Plushenko and the breakout performances of the Russian ladies made them the favourites this year.

Don't forget guaranteed medals for USA and Canada.

With the combined pull of those countries in figure skating and olympics in general, easy to see how this came to be.
