I remember being shocked at how bad Seabrook was at the last Olympics and wondering what the hell he was doing on the team.

Seabrook had the lowest ice time of any defenceman on the team last Olympics, and by a large margin. It was abundantly clear that taking him was a mistake, and that Babcock had little to no use for him.

Keith is a go-to shutdown option for Team Canada against the very toughest competition in the world. That means his defensive partner is too. Seabrook was massively exposed in that role at the last Olympics.

He needs to at least got consideration, because he definitely is one of the better Canadian defencemen, but I'd say he's pretty darn far down the list when it comes to actually suiting up for Canada at the Olympics.

Straight CF is similar to +/- in that players are rewarded for playing for good teams and punished for playing on bad teams. CFRel isn't a flawless stat but in this situation I think it's better than plain CF.

Well I imagine Team Canada could say no.

Just unilaterally change their minds about who's on their team? I don't really think so. "Yeah, we wanted you on the team when we picked it at the selection deadline, but we like this guy now, so you're cut." Don't think that'd work.

That wasn't my thinking. It was more along the lines of...

"you're not 100%, we're going to take someone who is. Sorry."

Obviously that's not the case now, but as many people have mentioned, It would make no sense to take a bottom dman that is 1/2 injured when you have a couple that are arguably just as good or better that are healthy.

My point is you can't just change your team after the selection deadline. There has to be an actual injury, to the point that the individual isn't physically able to participate. That's determined by whether or not you're medically cleared - by doctors. If you can play, but the team decides, for whatever reason, that you're not currently playing well enough and they'd rather have someone else, that's not reason enough.

Now, if the player's banged up enough that he's going to be a liability, you'd hope that he'd bow out himself for the good of the team, a la Henrik Sedin this week. But it won't necessarily happen, a la Pavel Datsyuk, who isn't close to 100% himself, or he'd be playing for the Wings right now.

Not that Russia doesn't want a semi-capable Datsyuk, because a semi-capable Datsyuk is better than whoever would replace him. But the point is that if the doctors give the thumbs up, it's the player's decision.

oh definitely agreed

which is why I think the advanced stats aren't worth a ton right now for individual play outside huge outliers on a team (i.e someone with a horrible CF on Chicago, or a great CF on Edmonton)

Plus all shots and shot attempts are treated equally.

Hamhuis has played over 14 already in tonight's game. Looks like he is good to go. Too bad no Gio for the Olympics. Go Canada!
