That might be partially a culture difference thing. I've heard Russian children's animations look creepy as hell to many who are not used to them.
I've seen quite a bit of East bloc made children's programs when I was a kid, so those mascots look very normal to me.

It wasn't so much their design that was CGI to me, just their glossiness and they way it looked like they didn't quite interact with light normally.

No giant inflatable stuff in an Olympic Opening Ceremony will ever be as good as the giant inflatable dinosaurs we had.

It's crazy to look back and what our Olympics were and what they've become. They're so much more bloated now.

Yeah, ours had the feel of "Hey guys, let's get together and put on a show for the world." Now, they're these big productions.

Atlanta 1996? I don't know, I was too young for any before then. Sydney in 2000 was definitely where it went full out over the top opening ceremonies.

It was LA 84. Calgary just decided not to go that way.
I remember Albertvilles was really weird.

I didn't see the mascots, but are they anything like Worker and Parasite?

No wonder Communism failed, these construction workers don't know what they're doing.
