Anyone know how to stream this in the US? I'm in Hawaii and the CBC stream isn't available in my area and NBC isn't live streaming the opening ceremonies. The NBC replay is at 2:30 Hawaian time, but I plan on being on the beach.

They've embraced them a long time ago. Russia doesn't have much in the way of international pop stars. They performed prominently in the Russian Eurovision ceremonies for example.
Plus, they were fake lesbians for publicity and sexy thrills for male audience, which I'm sure is just fine for Russians.

And yeah, as for the mascots, they had a CGI look to them, not that I think they did it with CGI, but they just have that weird look.

This seems very similar to the Vancouver ceremonies, just with Russian stuff instead of Canadian.
