Kris Letang's mystery illness is not believed life threatening, but the Penguins are not sure when he will play again this season, multiple sources told the Tribune-Review.

The team planned to update Letang's condition Friday.
There were concerns last week that Letang's season — if not his career — could be in jeopardy because of the illness, the sources said.

Sounds pretty bad, hopefully he is able to return at some point in the near future.

Absolutely horrible. You never want to see a guy's career end like that. Hope it's not a worst case scenario for him.

Hope he is ok. If he is gone for season that opens another 3.5M in cap space. Guess we will know more tomorrow. Maybe a staph infection like Sieloff as he did have an infected elbow earlier this season?

From the article, he had an elbow infection that required surgery in December.

Any doctors want to weigh in on likely culprits? Staph infection? Blood poisoning? Kidney damage?

Not a doctor, but there's literally nothing to go on. As far as we know that infection was cured.

It literally could be anything.

I am a doctor, and I can only speculate that Letang has become the index case for the long-anticipated zombie virus that will result in the downfall of humanity.

God help us all.

That would be terrible. His best buddy Luc Bourdon died in a wreck and would suck if his career was cut short.

It wouldn't necessarily cut his career short.

Derian Hatcher played in the NHL for nearly 8 years after becoming undead. It had a negligible impact on his on-ice decision making, and if anything it improved his foot speed.

Shelly Anderson @pgshelly
#Penguins ALERT. Letang had a stroke. Will miss at least six weeks.

Shelly Anderson @pgshelly
Letang will be treated with blood-thinners. Not believed to be career threatening. #Penguins

Letang had very small hole discovered in wall of his heart. Something he was born with. Possible connection to stroke. #Penguins
