Backlund - 14G, 29P, -6
Johansson - 7G, 36P, -11

Backlund has been so hot lately that it seemed like the smart choice, but it's not like Johansson is a bum. This isn't as obvious as the Hudler omission.

One of Gio/Backlund better get the call or I'll be kicking puppy dogs pretty soon.

I don't like rumours (in this case reports from reputable sources) getting me all amped up only to have it become nothing. I just really want some guys to cheer for in these games and Berra/Smid don't exactly get me out of my seat.

Of course I'll be rooting for Canada overall, but it definitely won't hit as close to home if they take the gold without one of our boys there to share in the glory.

Johansson is OK but Backlund is one of the hottest players in the league right now. If he doesn't get to go, it better be because of roster rules.

Backlund has had an iffy history with the Swedish national team.

I don't know the reasons, but he's been routinely benched and put on 4th lines when he's named to the team, despite performing exceptionally well in the limited ice time he gets.

Maybe there's a personality clash, maybe the Swedish coaches don't like something in his game, but I never anticipated they'd put him on the Olympic team.

Maybe Backlund wasn't even on their radar, and then they wake up tomorrow to see all these news stories about this kid allegedly being chosen, then they look into to see why and they realize he's been absolutely tearing it up lately, persuading them to then go with him anyways lol.

I'd like to see Backlund go but Johansson is a pretty strong candidate to go and has a better resume at a younger age. If they are looking for offensive ability that is, I cannot speak about his defensive game. But offensively it's not all that close despite Backlund's recent hot streak.

Johansson's worst offensive season to date (I am pro-rating the lockout season) was better than Backlund's best. It's really hard to suggest Backlund deserves it more if they plan on playing the player in the top 6.

Lots of teammates there. Top line of Red Wings, Capitals on the second line, Blues on the third. In such a short tournament, finding chemistry quickly can be key. That bottom six looks great in terms of two-way ability. Lots of young guys to take over from the old guard (Alfredsson, Sedins etc) in the coming years. This will be a pretty tough team to beat, especially when you consider their strong D and Lundqvist in net.

Kinda disappointed for Backlund, but to be even considered is a huge accomplishment. Almost went from doghouse to the biggest possible stage in a few short months. And now at least he can bring his friends over from Sweden like he had planned. If you're out at the bars in Calgary over the next few weeks, look out for a gang of tall blonde Swedes!

Yeah, this article is more speculation, and from yesterday, before swedish radio reported it is Johansson.
