On top of the national offering, Sportsnet will air all 82 regular-season games from the Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers. A minimum of 53 Toronto Maple Leafs games will be aired by Rogers, 40 of them nationally and a minimum of 13 regionally.
|
|
Does this mean all 82 will be broadcast nationally? or just games on Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday and maybe Thursday will be available nationally?

Saturday Sunday Wednesday is their national window is it not? I assume it will be as it is now, most on Sportsnet West only, the rest on all four regions or City.

Saw mention of games on FX Canada on Sundays. Never heard of it. Do I get that channel? I'm on Bell.

that's what I thought originally, but they make a point to say how many national and regional Leafs games but didn't for the Flames, Oilers or Canucks.

So Rogers take over NHL Network as well? Maybe they'll upgrade to HD.

That would be a major improvement. It doesn't make sense why it's not already. Kathryn Tappen in HD.

The CBC might have some of the Sat. Flames games. The way I read it is that some of the regional games could be promoted to national on the non exclusive nights.

Sounds to me like they are trying to make things more confusing by using numerous channels, having some regional other national, depending on night. Would have been simpler to have certain channels only broadcast nationally, whatever the day. Just seems like more of a clusterfata now.

It'll be ok once we get there. Just print out a weekly schedule of games and see what you can watch.
We soccer people have done it for years. Wake up Saturday morning and games can be on TSN, TSN2, SN, SN1, SN360 or SNW, we never know for sure.
For example, this weekend http://www.canadasoccertv.ca/

Here's the long and the short of what I gather.
Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday games are all national. No blackouts or regional restrictions.
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday games are regional games and may be subject to regional restrictions and blackouts. However, Rogers is going to work with the teams and NHL to potentially lift the blackout regional restrictions on some of these regional games. That would mean we might get to see some Flames games nationally on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday but that is not set in stone and would merely be a bonus. They would still be regional games but with the blackout lifted.
Wed-Sat-Sun = National
Mon-Tue-Thu-Fri = Regional

Which is great, but for those that this effects, kind of sucks to "might" be able to see it. That's what I mean, it's really not very definite which seems silly to me.
Living in Alberta, it doesn't effect me, but for those elsewhere, KNOWING that you can watch the game you want would be nice as opposed to "you might be able to see it".
Just wish they would do away with the whole "national" vs "regional" stuff and just show the games. If you get x channel, then you can watch any games broadcast on that channel. That would make more sense.

I would bet you're not going to see any more national games than you get now besides potentially one on Sunday.
They may offer a Centre Ice 'lite' deal where you can get all the Sportsnet channels blackout free.
But it makes little sense for the teams to agree to lower the amount of regional games substantially. They can earn big bucks selling those rights (as we just saw with Ottawa). They aren't going to start pulling games from that package on a major level.
My best guess - exact situation as now EXCEPT no random regional Sportsnet Saturday afternoon games (which happens rarely now) and a few added Sunday national games.
Wednesday's will be similar to now with a couple of games going national (like the TSN/TSN2 games now) and you may get the odd out of market all American games on SN360/SNone.

I am affected by regional blackouts. Because Eastlink doesn't carry TSN-Montréal for some reason and I don't have RDS I still didn't get the Flames game last night despite being in Montréal's territory.
I would assume that the regional blackout lifts would be announced before the season starts. It would probably mean Rogers would have to pay the teams extra because the ad revenue would increase with a national audience.

Since there is still regional broadcasts and bidding on regional contracts, then the regional blackouts would remain.
Rogers has the regional rights for Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver as well as the national rights. TSN has Montréal, Ottawa, and Winnipeg (I don't recall who has Toronto's).
|
Sportsnet, TSN, and Leafs TV all split the regional rights for Toronto. Sportsnet will have most of them next season.

I hate blackouts, especially living in a different country where the NHL sold the rights to HNIC to a small no name channel.

Oh wow the Jays are on 4 Sports Net channels. What, SportsNet Connected is on four channels for 5 hours, plus a variation of Connected on 360?
As for how much people out here want to watch the Senators. There is a large amount of Sens fans. Not as many as the Leafs and Habs, but they are clearly the #3 fan base and aren't small. It seems people who didn't grow up in Habs or Leafs families are Senators fans.
|
Sportsnet East and Ontario have very similar programming schedules that Shaw Cable took off the east channel from their channel lineup. The only differences are the Senators and Leafs games, NFL games, and some MLB games.
The Blue Jays are on all four Sportsnet regional channels but, not everyone has that package that includes the other regional channels. Everyone has at least one of them, it is optional to have the other channels.

I don't understand the regional channel bit. With Sportsnet now having 3 national channels (SN, SN1, SN360), it seems they're wasting their money with regional channels, and should get rid of them. They should adopt TSN's method when showing regional games, and have it show in the specific region.

I believe it's a condition of their broadcast licence.

SN1 and SN360 are national channels. SN is regional with Pacific, West, Ontario, and East channels but can have national programs or games on all 4 of them at the same time or different times.
