Ken King boards the C-train at Fish Creek station at 3:10 PM. Ken travels north at an average speed of 70 km/h. Brian Burke catches the C-train from Whitehorn station (after being mugged in the NE ghettos of course) at 3:20 PM traveling southbound at the same speed as Mr King. Who reaches the downtown core first, and finds an appropriate site for the new arena?

- More and better luxury suites. Increase revenue.
- Implementation of better/more club areas. Increase revenue.
- Bigger/more concourses. Improves efficiency and increases revenue.
- New equals flashy which equals pricy which people are willing to pay. You get the idea.
Most of these mean more costs to the fans, but this is a business after all. Supply and demand.
Aside from direct consumers costs, there's others that they can do with a new venue.
- Build new arena with new football stadium, which rumours indicate.
- Training/practice facility built with arena.
- Ownership of land means they can build hotels, offices, retail, convention space around the arena.
- Gain parking revenue, which they currently don't on Stampede land.
- Negate flood impact if possible.
Those are just off the top of my head. The owners may have more reasons of why they want a new arena. But either way, a lot has changed in 30 years, and the new arenas show just how outdated, and limited the Saddledome is for the owners, and fans.

I get why the owners want a new arena. I get why the fans want a new one. What I'm saying is that when you look at the cost of a new arena VS the added revenue for owners + added amenities for STHs the cost-benefit analysis is nowhere near net positive.

Its also really slow. The commute from Sunnyside to the University is 8 minutes. Like I'll be doing that.
Also, whats with the university being in the suburbs? Lets talk about that in this thread too! I posit that all great cities have universities in the downtown core.

You say that the 'Dome is a 'dump' but I say that it has old-timey charm.
Heidi and Howdy should wander the concourse during intermissions.

May I suggest using the Calgary Public Transit Thread? I've wanted to jump into this discussion about the transit stuff a bunch of times but haven't wanted to further derail this thread.
Even if this particular discussion doesn't spill over there (or rather, get rehashed - everything in this discussion has been discussed in that thread in the past), I would recommend people read through it anyway. You will probably learn a lot you have never known that you never knew.

Note that some of the information on the first page is out of date. I should update that sometime.

As per the cost benefit analysis you will be providing later?

Now this Russian Olympic arena with the LED lights on the roof is pretty cool. Wonder if its feasible at a long term use facility:

Or Jaimeson Place
Or Solara or whatever that thing is on the West end of 6th Avenue.
Or the current Saddledome lights that have had their fair share of issues.
It seems like it shouldn't be that hard to make lights work... but apparently it is.

No kidding. The concourse is akin to McMahon which is way too small for the amount of people the facility seats. It's tough for me to take my two young boys at once by myself because you pretty well have to hold on to both of them tight as you push through the crowds trying to get from one side to the other or they can get lost in a sea of people moving in the other direction.

My money is still on something like this, at this location, as frinkprof posted on the first page.
With all of the hints kk has made, I see it being a massive arena/stadium multiuse building that will have very few dark nights. Basically a game changer in North America. Also guessing a 800m pricetag.

Sorry, I have a hard time believing that the Flames would build an arena next to a 'future SE LRT line'.
Do you know how long it's going to take to get the SE LRT built? Could be another 10-15 years.
Makes more sense to build it in the West Village, rename 'Sunalta' into 'Stadium' and boom, you're done.

The only thing we know for sure is that this thing will be built before Edmonton gets their shovels in the ground.
