This happens all the time on Skyscraperpage. Lots of insiders with information, but can only share tidbits. The masses get all blue balled about it.

Not sure why Calgary has to wait for other cities to do it first. Having a train from the airport to the downtown core is HUGE. It will be absolutely essential to have in the future, if it isn't already. We have many business travelers coming here and tourism is growing. It makes complete sense.
|
If the Calgary Airport Authority steps up today and says that they will pay for their part of the line (as happened in Vancouver), I'm sure there would be shovels in the ground (more or less) tomorrow.
Otherwise, I've been over this with you before. Airports aren't very good ridership generators, and until such a time as there aren't other unbuilt transit projects that are much better ridership generators, LRT to the airport shouldn't be near the top of the priority list.

I don't disagree with you that there are other important transit routes first to address (ie. the SE LRT Line). It doesn't have to be a top priority, but in my lifetime, I sure would like to see this built.
I'm just passionate about this because I've spent time in Vancouver, San Francisco, Tokyo, Sapporo and Amsterdam and I can tell you having a train from the airport is a MAJOR godsend.

I feel the same way. I get excited because I believe your info to be credible and exciting, and although I wish you could tell us more, I completely understand why you can't.
Maybe I'm missing something, but I just saw it as "I wish you could tell us more!" and nothing else.

What get's me about Muta's posts is the "I know something that you don't know" aspect.
If you can't talk about it why trumpet the fact that you're "in the know"? Does it make you feel important?
If you can share, then share. If you can't share then spare us the 'I'm an insider' bs.

I disagree. If you look at what he says, he gives plenty of information. It's not as crystal clear as "they are breaking ground on this day" but he does give a nice enough view of the general stage most projects are in.
I'd rather have a tiny bit than nothing at all.

I've never been arriving at the airport and wanted to jump on a C-Train or any public transit. It's definitely taxi for me. I can see why ridership wouldn't be great. You get off the plane, get on the train to head downtown and then you're walking around downtown with your luggage to get to your hotel? Naw.

Maybe it's the backpacker in me, but I've always found transit from the airport incredibly useful. I think it definitely caters to people who are travelling light (backpackers, business trips, weekend trips, etc) and personally, I think it's a necessary addition.
That said, it really should be the airport building the station.

I quite like Muta's posts, to be honest. They are interesting little bits that we wouldn't otherwise know. Of course, we'd all like to know more, but I'll take little snippets over nothing at all.

I'll continue to post in that style, and when I feel like it. Now I'm going to do it even more obscure just to get you even more annoyed.

Any leaks are detrimental to many involved, and could have impacts that run from the PR all the way to legal fallout. Come on guys, this is the same stuff that happens in many industries about why you can't release information. Hell, even the Flames rendering on Daily Planet put the Flames in fire extinguisher mode. That alone is more than enough reason to see that some things just can't be said directly, even if things are implied overtly.

To each their own, but I disagree strongly. I traveled to Vancouver on business last week and found it incredibly useful to take the train directly from the airport to downtown (and vice versa on the return trip). I even wished we had similar service in Calgary.

Agreed - flying to Seattle from Calgary and jumping on the train to get deposited 3 blocks from our hotel was fantastic.
And to those who haven't heard, most suitcases have wheels these days. Really. Makes it much easier to move them around downtown after getting off the train.....

I've used the Canada Line the last two times I flew to Vancouver, and it was extremely convenient. I'm not sure there's any city in North America (including NYC) where it's that easy to get to the heart of your city from the airport. I definitely see how there are other options that would give you more bang for your dollar, but I thought it was a great addition to the city. Even if Calgary chooses to focus on other transit aspects in the immediate future, at some point it will definitely make sense to link the airport to the train.
In the meantime, can we get rid of the airport Taxi monopoly at least? Time to get some Car 2 Go's there.
