1-way & 2-way contracts are strictly to do with how much you get paid.

1-way: paid the same no matter if you're in AHL or NHL
2-way: paid different salaries depending on which league you're playing in

Waiver eligibility: (From Wikipedia)
Quote:
Once an NHL player has played in a certain number of games or a set number of seasons has passed since the signing of his first NHL contract, that player must be offered to all of the other NHL teams before he can be assigned to a minor league affiliate.

After a player has been designated for assignment, the other 29 NHL teams can put in a claim or waive their claim for that player.

Holy crap if Street clears waivers, I think the Heat might have a top-5 team in terms of pure talent.

Granlund-Reinhart-Jones (easily the top line, these guys are damn near unstoppable)
Baertschi-Street-Locke (all skill)
Olson-Knight-Hanowski (good skill with good two-way abilities)
Gillies-Bancks-MacDermid (see Calgary's fourth line)

O'Brien-Wotherspoon (shutdown pairing)
Smith-Ramage (best puck moving D pairing)
Billins-Lamb (very good O-zone pairing)

I mean, c'mon, now that's a superb AHL lineup. If they play to the systems perfectly like this did this weekend, I can't see how they won't lock down the division.

It does to a minor degree - there are stipulations which dictate that two-way players over a given salary (currently I think it's 105,000) are waiver eligible. But I think you're right in the sense that it's more based around money, not the form of the contract.

I always love seeing two enforcers on the same line. Childhood memories.

I really think with Ortio, they're trying to avoid a Leland Irving situation. Irving was doing really well in the AHL, then they started pulling the callup/send down situation, and I think that was really detrimental to his development. That's why I think they're only looking at calling up Ortio as a last resort, so he can get into and keep his groove in the AHL over an extended period of time.

I think they'll be calling up Joni. There's only 3 games left until the Olympic break and then the next time we play is the 27th at home.

I can see them just bringing him up for the road trip (MTL, PHI, and NYI are winnable games) and then send him back to the Heat, by then hopefully Ramo is ready and well rested.

Both years irving came up he had brutal stats in the AHL: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p....php?pid=77285

He never really had a great year down there. He had an adequate year in 10-11... but never anything close to what Ortio is doing this year.

EDIT: Ortio has pretty similar stats in the AHL as that guy who played for the Wild yesterday and he's done ok in the NHL so far (not great but ok). Ortio is a year younger though.

Street's also on the AHL All-Star Team, and with the Flames off for two weeks AND Glencross due back soon, the plan was probably to send him down for the break anyway to give him playing time and so he could play in the All-Star Game.

And probably also the Ortio Factor.

Just because Street is on waivers does not mean he will be sent down right away. Street being waived today will still allow him to be sent down before the break to get some games in and help the Heat.

Also I have a feeling Ramo's injury will be minor. So I think he will ride the bench until the break to rest him.

I think that if Ramo is put on IR, the flames must keep Ortio up through the Olympics.

I have never listened to an Ortio interview before and I was stunned the second he started talking. I expected a thick accent and broken English and wow, there is barely an accent there at all.

This seems like the likely case. Passing Street through waivers now means a quicker reaction time to swap him out for Ortio if Ramo isn't good to at least back up next game. Or, as you said, send Street down to bolster the Heat's lineup during the break.

In regards to waiver eligibility, capgeek is a great tool to take the confusion out of it. http://capgeek.com/waiver-calculator/
Ortio is exempt through all of next season, or 72 NHL games played (whichever comes first).

+1...if you didn't know that his name was Joni Ortio, you'd think he was just a regular Canadian or American player. I can't even hear much of an accent. I was just as surprised the first time I heard Gabriel Landeskog speak, haha.

Ortio is here!!!

Pat Steinberg ‏@Fan960Steinberg 4s
Think it's pretty safe to say Ortio has been recalled, seeing as how he's on the ice here at the Saddledome. #Flames
