Cooke's goal was a bit weak perhaps but Wideman's play was extremely soft there. Allowed Cooke to take his best shot, which in fairness to Berra, was a pretty good one.

Even if Ramo is ok, I hope they give him a week off and we give Ortio a look. Actually been looking forward to seeing Ortio for a long time.

I was against bringing Ortio up, thinking he'd just get lit up and it could end up setting him back. But with how the team seems to be playing now, I agree, especially if Ramo is going to miss any games. I saw one of the split squad games in the pre season and the 2 goalies were Ortio and JoeyMac. Ortio was definitely the superior of the 2 then, and he's even better now

Just keep in mind that Ortio started last season in Abbey, so he has more experience on NHL ice.
If Burke expects to let 2 goalies go at the end of the year, one will be Macdonald. The 2nd will be either Roy or Berra. If we have a better look at what Ortio can do(and Roy in Abbotsford) then maybe this sways thoughts on where the flames sit with goaltenders.
As an aside, calling Ortio up, and practicing him, paying him, while not necessarily starting him, is a huge advantage. You see a lot in practice. You also show Ortio that he is in your plans. You only start Ortio in a game if he shows he's earned it. #meritocracy

Cooke himself mentioned this. He was surprised how much time he had.
Wideman needs to pressure him at least a tiny bit. There was time for a beer league guy to pick his spot.
It was basically Wideman giving the same lack of respect to Cooke that the Wild D did to Westgarth.
You see what happens, Larry?

Is it a lack of respect or Wideman simply being a terrible defensively? I think it's the latter.

Wideman should have played the body and forced a shot from a worse angle too. Berra didn't play it well but that was a 1 on 2 and Wideman had Cooke to the outside, I think Wideman played it so much worse than Berra.
I have always kind of defended Wideman, but I want him gone as plays like this are becoming the norm with him. Only problem now is with his play I don't think he can be traded without salary being eaten or another bad contract coming back.

MCL injury for Ramo .
Randy Sportak @SUNRandySportak 1m
#Flames G Karri Ramo has a MCL injury. No timeline for a return.
Should be out a while I would think.

MCL recovery takes 6 weeks on average for a strain... Hopefully Ramo won't be out too much longer than that.
Perhaps the title of this thread could now legitimately be changed to Reto Berra vs Kari Ramo vs Joni Ortio?

Maybe let's wait until he actually gets into a game

Well, this is Berra's chance to step up and put himself back in the conversation of being Calgary's number one goalie. If he looks like he has thus far this season, he'll have an even bigger uphill to climb once Ramo returns.

Conversely this could be Ortio's chance to move up the depth chart. If he is solid in his starts I could see Hartley riding him until Ramo returns and Berra being the odd man out especially with his contract status.

Yeah, I mentioned in another thread, maybe it works out similar to the acquisition of Kiprusoff after Turek's injury? Wouldn't that be nice!
