I use my LinkedIn profile to keep in touch with customers and partners in my industry.

Before then, it was a valuable tool in my career hunting. Make sure you have a good summary, as most recruiters and HR personal will use programs looking for keywords in your profile, before even looking closer at you.

One day I was talking to my Supervisor about what type of person I wanted to hire to help transition our department to a new software program. Our companies website was badly out of date, and the job described on it was nothing like what I wanted hired.

We got talking about an old coworker of mine and tried looking him up on linked in. Found out he had recently switched jobs and was driving an hour to work. We contacted him and asked him how things were going. Three weeks later we were able to hire him. So it can be a good resource in that aspect.

I find that without fail the weasley, overly political colleague's of mine always have a Linkedin account with far fetched employment summaries and a contrived 'power' photo.

I'm currently looking for some sales people for a startup company and have thought about using Linkedin. I've had LinkedIn for a while but I haven't really used it very much. Does anyone have any tips on the best way to recruit off LinkedIn? Is it worth it to have any thing more than the free basic account or do the premium accounts provide some good benefits?

with a sales basic as apposed to free, you can...
(from the site)
- you can pinpoint the right leads (4 Premium filters - Seniority, Company Size, Interests, Fortune 1000; 8 Premium filters - 4 filters + Functions, Years of experience, Your groups, New to LinkedIn)
- full profiles and who's view your profile as apposed to limited for the free
-Lead Builder: Manage your pipeline to source and close deals.

thats just for the first step. you can go to higher priced ones as well that give you even more features.

LinkedIn allows you to setup a custom URL to link to your profile. Most people make it FirstnameLastname though. Really cleans it up when linking to others which I find I do somewhat often in emails.

Under edit profile, you will see your current URL underneath your photo, just click edit.

Also the many linking to their profiles here is awesome. I would suggest having the link on here show as "My Profile" "[url=LinkedInURL]My Profile[/ url]" or something instead of including your name in the URL because as google searches later when someone goes to google your name they will come across your post here and then have access to all of your posts. If you use the same username on other forums they will then be able to search those. Might not be a huge deal for some, but many wouldn't want to give all possible future employers all this information.

I should probably get one of these profiles at some point. Most of my colleagues have linkedin, I always thought it was facebook for office politicos, or a connections website for people who suck at making real connections.

I was laid off back in November and was advised to join LinkedIn by the career transition rep my former company set me up with. He advised not putting much detail in my profile. He said the last thing I wanted to do was basically put my resume on the site and keep the work history very brief. State the job but do not go into detail on the duties.

It only took me about a month and a half to find a new job and the carreer transition guy was so useless so I am guessing he was way off.

LinkedIn is a powerful tool. I founded a group on LinkedIn known as "YOGP" (Young Oil and Gas Professional). we have around 6000 members in the group. Last year we got some sponsors and organized a networking meet which was attended by some 70 members. Great Food and drinks free for members and in return we try to give some face time to sponsors also in coming days will be raising money for cancer..

I'm a big fan of LinkedIn...not for personal development per se. But I am creating some web tools that use LinkedIn APIs (software 'lego-blocks') to create some tools to help look at parts of the regional economy and help with program/policy assessment.

I noticed the thread started a while back. Since then I think linkedin has become even more important. I know a few recruiters who look at linkedin first when finding the right candidate. I also know a couple people who have received job offers from there (unsolicited)

Did the guy say why you should not put much detail in there?

I use to not be a big fan of linkedin, but now I find it nice to have an expanded professional network. Getting sniffed out regularly by headhunters is always a nice reminder that there are options out there.

just got a second employment offer through LinkedIn.

I think the site is not only good for connecting but it does allow employers to peruse potential candidates for positions.

and no, I wasnt interested in the position.

They offered you a job without interviewing you?

They had checked out my profile, asked around about me (I live in a small community) and contacted me to see if I would be interested in the position.

Happens all the time out here.

Oh ya, but they didn't offer you a job. In the tech industry this happens twice a week.
