Meh.
The dome is like that rickety old Lazyboy with duct tape on the arms that you never want to give up. I am OK with it for the time being.

I am ok with how long it is taking, as long as they do it right. With all this waiting, it is making me want to believe it will be glorious. Magnanimous. I am sure it will end up being one of the new wonders of the world.
Seriously though.. just build it right and make the seats comfy.

No time to post the Princess Bride, but I don't think that means, what you think it means...
mag·nan·i·mous (măg-năn′ə-məs)
adj.
1. Courageously noble in mind and heart.
2. Generous in forgiving; eschewing resentment or revenge; unselfish.
Unless that's what you meant, and if so, that'd be one heckuva building...

By the time the shovel hits the ground on this thing, the Flames will have the oldest arena in the NHL* by a decade. Great.
* MSG excepted.

Yeah you can't include the Islanders because they'll be gone. Another depressing thought: we'll also have the oldest/worst sports facilities for hockey AND football in Canada, if not North America. Yikes.

There are some really old football stadiums in the US, but they've all undergone expansion/renovations through the years.

Yeah they definitely aren't afraid to spend the public's money down there like drunken sailers. Can't think of one city that hasn't built a new ballpark or football stadium or arena for their teams in the last decade. Quite insane actually.

Joe Louis is still pretty damn old. But Flames will be the second oldest venue once Oilers are done theirs and Islanders move different neighbourhoods. Don't know why it's taking them so long.

And the Wings could be in their new building by 2017-2018 so we will have the oldest building at some point.

The Wings will be playing in a new arena before the Flames even start building theirs.

Red Wings have got it done quicker then I thought then. It was only a few years ago that I recall any news of Red Wings looking to replace their venue. They've already struck a deal with the city to get it done. Seems all that's needed is the design and then the go ahead.
Flames have been talking about this since 2005? Maybe 2006/07 when they confirmed they would build a new venue rather than renovate? They've really hit some roadblocks.

With Detroit in bankruptcy, that deserves a big head shake.

The areas around their new venues is helping rebuild downtown and bring back some economy to it. In this regard, it's probably beneficial for both since Detroit needs to do anything it can.

I could be wrong but I thought I read that city of Detroit isn't paying anything and any tax payer funds are coming from the state.

Any idea exactly how the new arena will be financed? I hear lots of different funding ideas but nothing concrete. I assume a ticket tax would be put into place so ticket prices would rise but not sure by how much
Looking forward to a new rink - that dome has got to go. None of the major concert acts can play at the dome due to its shape and we always lose the big name bands to Edmonton

What's the life of a pro-sports arena? 40-60 years on average? The dome was built in 1983...its only been 31 years. As much as we'd all love a new arena, its a giant waste of money.
And to all the people complaining it will be the oldest in the league before they replace it...isn't that a good sign? A sign that we actually used the dome to the end of its useful life? That money wasn't wasted.
What exactly is wrong with the dome that justifies $400 million? I don't get it. I can't believe I'm the only one...

At least they probably had no shortage of prime, inexpensive land for a building in Detroit.
