It's a shame something like the above couldn't be combined with an Olympic bid. I'm at work and cant pull up the link, but it talks about the long term issues of winter bid cities ability to generate snow due to global warming and it seems to benefit Calgary.

I wonder if they would do something like the above combined arena/stadium along with a convention centre attached. Seems like Calgary is busting at the seams for convention space anyways. This would be another potential revenue stream for the Flames owners.

The modular ceiling is actually powered by a hand-crank, which Moran has to operate himself.

I doubt that would pick a location right next to the river, but I do like stadium/arena idea.

Not only is it "no Barclays", but it's not a lot of other leagues, too. I read an article that had the MLS ranked 37th among football (soccer) leagues

It's one of the 3 or 4 areas the team has looked at.

Oh certainly. MLS is a pile of crap compared to the big guns like Barclays and La Liga, as well as the smaller guys like Allsvenskan. Personally, there is almost no reason I would watch MLS over any other match on any given day.

That said, MLS is better than nothing. And for live professional level soccer, we've got just that.

I wholeheartedly agree. Like you, I also can't think of a single thing that MLS is better than.

Absolutely. We have an enormous amount of fun watching my son's U13 team play. Used to like the sport, love it now.

If I remember right that area wasn't close to flooding last spring (well relatively speaking not close), so I don't think it would be too big an issue.

EDIT:
Following up, it wasn't flooded there, and isn't on the new flood fringe/floodway zone area:

Things may have changed since the flood.

There was a water stain on the base that goofy piece of art by the pumphouse theater, don't think it got up to the theater itself though.

That side of the river didn't flood, higher river banks and elevation...although I do think that spot is still a tad bit too close to the river, certainly higher risk.

I don't see much utility in spending big $ on a football stadium. The Stamps have 10 home games a year. The MLS and NFL are pipe-dreams. I don't envision many big stadium concerts either. How many does BC Place or Commonwealth get each year?

According to the flood photos the City got, the area did pretty well.

MLS is not a pipe dream. The NFL is, but not MLS. Especially if the stadium is covered.

I dont see Calgarians watching Soccer like they do in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. I cant see even 10,000 Calgarians going to see live MLS soccer game after game.

It's a pipe-dream. There are 19 teams already in MLS, and Calgary is only the 49th largest metro population in North America.

I can only see it happening if MLS does a second and third division.

If the Roughnecks can do 8,000 playing a very small scope sport, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect similar if not higher, for the worlds most popular sport --- ultimately dependent upon the facility.

Soccer. Remember the Drillers. That worked out well. Just curious where the money will come from to build an 850 million dollar arena? Ownership will not foot the bill for that and good luck getting taxpayer money.
