I'm in the same boat with regards to being open about mine. It's absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. People always wear the scars of diseases they've survived as badges. Why should I be any different?

In a sense, depression is similar to something like diabetes - if a diabetic takes his insulin every day to help him function, a depressive taking his pill every morning at breakfast to have a regular day isn't any different.

This seems too important to be a corporate-led initiative, but I can't think of any better solutions.
This is key to me. I understand that people don't care for the corporate inclusion here, but when asked the question "how should we raise 5 million dollars for this cause?", there isn't a ton of great ideas thrown around.

Would people prefer Bell spend this money on initiatives like this, or more ads? It's going to be spent regardless, might as well try to strengthen our communities with it.

I'd prefer if Bell didn't gouge their customers so much.

Just like Olympic athlete funding, this is advertising to them. They could have taken from their profits and donated the funds anonymously, but that isn't what corporations do. Their name and logo is all over this campaign.

So, the question is, would I rather Bell spend their advertising money on more flyers in the mail or more TV spots, or give to a good cause... I guess the latter is preferred. But I just don't like being manipulated. This is a company that is buying up competitors at every opportunity and then having massive waves of layoffs. Now, is that what a corporation is supposed to do? Maximize profits by any means necessary? Of course. I don't consider it ethical, but don't expect ethical behaviours from companies. But campaigns like this try to whitewash any concerns the public could have about them. "See... We're the good guys."

I hate derailing this thread, but I really think that campaigns like this should be made via the government. And the funding to projects that Bell are giving should be paid for by government. But then I've always wondered why hospitals need funding drives... where are our taxes going if not to hospitals, schools and the like?

If players like Kevin Bieksa can add some personal notes to their tweets today, why couldn't the Flames players do it? All I see is a wall of retweets from the Flames with nothing of value.

While this is clearly advertising for Bell, if it helps alleviate the stigma of mental illness, increases financial support for those suffering from mental illness, and helps those suffering from mental illness... who cares if Bell profits (in one way or another)?

I'd be totally fine with Bell or any company making billions of dollars if, even if they only indirectly, eliminate mental illness as a major problem.

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.
