They could be incredible if you can move the roof anyway you want. That would be an amazing stadium. Really cool idea.

Much better than a cavernous space. The best concert halls in the world for acoustics are small shoeboxes.

So something like this is gonna be pretty damn pricey, but that's a world class building for a world class city.
Hopefully the outside looks just as cool. Granted this is actually the concept they're going to roll with.

Right, but I guess my question is more what kind of material would it be? "Lightweight membrane" so some thin material that still has large cavernous space above it? Doesn't seem like it'd make much of a difference acoustics wise, just for the visual effect and ambience.

I wouldn't be shocked if the flames choose Populous to design the new rink.

All it has to do is absorb the sound. A lightweight material should be able to do enough of that.

Most likely the animation was created for Populous' bid to design the new arena for the Flames.
Whether their design won and if the additional cost a ceiling like this actually allow for it to be built is a different story.

A ceiling like that isn't really anything new. New for arenas perhaps, but concert halls everywhere have ceilings similar to that - for example, the Jack Singer.
With the Flames' logo on there, it is definitely work that was done for the Flames, the question is then, whether this was part of a proposal, as you suggested, or whether its a rendering as part of actual design.

That's an incredibly slick design. Although I cannot help but doubt that roof would be very easy or cheap to make, build and use. Still pretty cool piece of ingenuity. Even if it looks very ambitious. I'd be happy if even one third of the roof was like that (around the stage area).

I don't know if it's hilarious or embarrassing but it's now been over 1 calendar year since this thread started citing Ron Maclean's Nostradamus prediction about the arena plans being announced in 3-4 months.
Not only has the sparse news spanned 60 pages (depending on your settings kids) of disappointment but the one flickering candlelight that dimly sways in the darkness was lit by the ####ing Discovery Channel and not even by the Flames. Hey Flames, in this season of no-hope it would be great if you'd open your Area 51 plans and let the fans know, hell even just season ticket holders who are certainly facing a pending surge in price with a new stadium- wtf is going on.
It would be sweet if the mods could add a counting clock to the side of this site to keep reminding all Flames staff the insanely long wait this base has waited for any news on this thing.
Almost to the point now where it could be considered canceled.

No kidding. I mean, I get that we don't want to be like the laughing stock Oilers and their sideshow embarrassment, but its like the Flames are polar opposites and won't release ANY details whatsoever.

I'm fine with the lack of announcements. I'd really like the announcement to be:
We're building a new stadium, here's what it's going to look like, here's how we'll be paying for it, this is when we break ground and this is when it will open.
Also, if it has that moving-roof-dealie, how awesome would it be to program a "playoff" setting into the design, whereby crowd-noise is significantly increased?

That would be incredible. Would be great for concerts as well as if the Flames do another Hockey Talk thing with Conroy and Burke
and hopefully an announcement that they are going back to their original uniforms from the 80s

The NHL projects they've worked on are generally considered the nicest buildings in the league.

They're working on the Las Vegas arena project, too.
