So...another flames mistake on a talented player...whats your point?
After 23 nhl games he had 1 less point than Kane did in his first 23. BTW,13th overall isn't mid-late. not that where your takin should say how ready you are,again.. politics
Bull!
|
No, you're right, drafting ranking is all just politics and doesn't represent the quality of the players.
My point is that your comparisons show a serious lack of understanding. As I said, it's like comparing the progression of Monahan to that of Crosby. Don't compare Kane and Sven, it's silly. You're being silly. Silly silly silly.
I don't know what you're not getting, but St.Louis was a undrafted kid who didn't do very well. He spent 3 years in the Flames system. He was given a shot, it didn't work out. TB gave him another shot and he did marginally better, then, suddenly turned it on. The Flames are responsible for his level of play, they taught him how to be the player he is now. It's hardly the fault of the Flames that he didn't put it all together in time to help them.
Savard spent 2 extra years in junior, 2 years in NY, and almost 4 years in Calgary. How is that comparable to Sven? Giving Sven tough love after 50 games is the same as giving Savard tough love after 6 seasons? Ridiculous.
If you understood why those players are no longer here, you'd understand why your comparisons are hollow.

It always really burned my ass how good St Louis, Savard, Stillman and Giguere were when they left town. Those painful years in the late 90's and early 2000's may not have been as bad. And dare I say if we had St Louis and Stillman in 2004 we'd have won.

Without moving Stillman we don't have Conroy though. I'd argue we don't make the finals in 2004 without him.
I also am really bored of people complaining about St. Louis, he was undrafted and we gave him a chance, but then we waived him and no other team picked him up. Then he signed with Tampa and ended up in the right situation and he became a star. I don't think for a second St. Louis becomes the player he is today if he remained in Calgary's system.
The Giguere and Savard deals however very much bothered me. I don't think Giguere was given a fair shake here and Savard was traded for good reason, but the return was very bad.

Savard traded for good reason? Being the whipping boy of a head coach that was having a meltdown is hardly what I call good reason. He was buddies with Iggy and who knows what could have happened had the Flames had a 1-2 punch of Conroy and Savard down the middle.

Then we wouldn't have had Conroy, who was nearly a ppg player from 2001-2004, and one of the reasons we got to the SCF (6G 11A +12 in 26GP)

Being buddies with Iginla doesn't mean he was a good player to keep around. There was talk about him being pretty arrogant and I thought I read he demanded the trade. Gilbert was a half brained moron but at the time it seems to me that both should have been sent packing.

Interesting version of history. Savard and the coach had their disagreements, but Savard was being outplayed by both Drury and Yelle in that season.
It's not that we traded Savard, that's what frustrates me about people bringing him (or St.Louis) up in conversation about Sven. It's what we got FOR him.

I still have faith that Zaynullin will come here and lead us to the promised land.
1-2 punch of Zaynullin/Monahan

Who cares if he was arrogant, wouldn't be the first NHL'er that needed to grow up in that regard, the kid had 65 points and after a year of injury problems was shipped off for absolutely nothing.
If you care to look it up on this very board I said at the time this was Buttons and Gilberts pink slips and they would probably never see the NHL again. Who's laughing? the even more arrogant coach who can't even get a job in any pro league anymore, A GM who works for TSN because he can't find any other work or the kid who put 40 million in the bank since.
Offensive talent is hard to come by, it should be groomed not ruined.

I hope you didn't hurt your shoulder patting yourself on the back. I'm not sure why you think I care what you said back them.
I am not defending the trade because it was clearly a putrid trade even then. Just saying I get why he was traded.

Savard was traded after 10 games the season they arrived, holy small sample size batman.
I guess you don't remember Savard playing with a groin injury either, Gilbert (the idiot he was) questioned it to the media that pissed off the whole team. Makes no wonder Drury wanted out of here.

Savard was a one trick pony who had no idea where or what to do in the defensive zone and didn't want to learn. Good riddance but good riddance to Button as well who got less than nothing in return.
As for St. Louis, I liked him while he was in Calgary. He never scored much being stuck on the 3rd and 4th line but you could see the talent.
Thanks Button for being a lousy GM. I saw him commenting in a Jets game about their prospect Lowery and Button goes on patting himself on the back about how he got his dad, Dave. He doesn't mention that he sent him to the minors, while Darryl had to call him up so he could be a big part of our run.

Wow, it was an honest question. No need to act all do she. Guess this thread is all about Savard now

I'm not sure why we're questioning memory. You've yet to be remotely convincing on why bringing up Savard in a thread about Sven is SLIGHTLY relevant.
Actual history shows the two have nothing to do with each other. So you brought Savard up because... you wanted the opportunity to tell the Internet "I told you so!"
Wow. Great. Nailed it.
EDIT: and apparently to pat yourself on the back for cancelling your season tickets two years before they went to the cup final. Great call!

Since you "get it" Please in your wisdom tell us why the team would trade it's best offensive center?
And my shoulder felt great the next year when I stopped pulling $5100.00 out of my pocket for season tickets.

I already said why. I thought you would have got that since you already quoted it once to complain about it

Nope, I just see the same thing happening over and over...the 80's flames teams sucked me in...downhill ever since.
