I don't know. Burke sounds just like Feaster when Feaster would give updates or press conferences and CP would whine and complain. Just a bunch of hot air.
Let transactions speak for you. Don't talk about how many GMs called you to justify Stajan's deal.

I don't really think that was the key statement regarding the Stajan deal. He simply mentioned it.
This is what happens when GMs are asked to do radio. Instead of letting their transactions speak for them and creating dead air, they actually talk and answer questions.

Which is fine, but Feaster used to get lit up on here for saying basically the same stuff that every other GM outside of Sutter says.

Didn't we used to call him Tubby McBlowhard? I'm sure it wasn't just because he was the Canucks GM. He is more vocal than most, yet somewhat quiet here in Calgary, as he said he would be. A big part of GMs jobs these days is to make themselves and their team look good in the media, without giving up their game plan to put themselves at a disadvantage with other GMs. It wouldn't and shouldn't be surprising to hear that they make up stuff all the time.

Probably because Feaster's track record is a rampaging dumpster fire.

Ya, I think that's beside the point and completely sussed out. Not a big deal worth considerable discussion, I just think Feaster was beaten up a little too much for saying essentially what "Tubby McBlowHard" just said... and Sutter got beaten up for operating under a cone of silence. Never satisfying.

I don't recall Feaster getting lit up for it, at least not at first, people loved it. He started to get lit up when his track record starting to catch up with him and he continued to say those things. Which does prove your point, all Burke proved today (and other days) is he can talk the talk. The truth comes from the actions, and that is what Burke should be judged on.
Still, I like it when Burke or any GM does something like this. as with all you have to read between the lines, and you can't take it all at face value, but if you are willing to analyze, it does give you a bit of details into what he might do or is thinking, so it's just extra information to add to the pool about what may happen with the team.

CP is hilarious.
Guy gets asked to do an interview, then posters get upset that he talks too much?
He wouldn't disclose which UFAs hes spoken to, didn't reveal anything he shouldn't have, but made an effort to be forthcoming and interesting with fans instead of canned answers and "no comments."
It was informative and interesting tidbits on a slow Monday afternoon. Hope we get more of these in the future.

I'd wager that the original list of names we were hearing to begin with are in fact the names Burke wants. Benning, Futa and that AGM from PHX. Two of which will likely be Flames employees before or after the draft. Really think Futa is a prime target for scouting purposes and would likely be AGM. and Benning would be GM. Just a guess.

I haven't heard Burke say Baertschi not making the tram would be the ''upset special'', guaranteeing us a playoff spot, or making any of the wild over sells that Feaster did.
Updates are fine. What Feaster did was ridiculous.

Looking forward to the trade deadline. Last year Feaster got a 1st and a former 3rd and a former 5th round pick for a guy who was averaging 0.71 PPG that season and had a lifetime 0.91 PPG in the playoffs and had a NMC.
This year Burke has a guy who is averaging 0.57 PPG and has a career 1.0 PPG average in 32 playoff games and has a limited NTC. You have to think bare minimum a 1st and a prospect, given the terrible return that Feaster got for his forward last year.
Trade deadline is going to be mighty interesting this year, I can't wait to see what transpires.

I don't like the fact that you just commented on this as it hurt a player's feelings or our bargaining position, but I appreciate the fact that you're commenting and talking to us and I would be furious if you didn't do so on a nearly continuous basis. I am CP.

-Doesn't interfere with coaches but has asked Ward to play Breen "until he drops" - wants to see exactly what he has with him
-Not willing to give high picks automatic time with Flames, they need to put in their time and pay their dues in the minors, draft position doesn't change that (mentioned Wotherspoon, Baertschi)
-Teams go thru 4 stages, crawl, walk, run, sprint - can't get to the next level without hard work and buy in from players and that's been there for Hartley
-Still need more skill and size
-Colin Campbell made a mistake fining Hartley
-Hockey isn't fun at the NHL level, only winning is fun, wants a coach who makes games hard, respects that Hartley had to pay his dues to get to this level
-Phone activity has picked up recently, teams will make trades before the trade freeze but there will be much more movement after it
-Probably going to wait towards end of deadline as a seller, thinks higher prices may be paid then
-Prices are never lower before the deadline, but as a buyer likes to get the player sooner
-Stajan's been very good for the Flames despite lack of team success and is underappreciated by Flames fans
-Only traded him because Sutter wanted him, has high hockey IQ and has been great with young kids
-Needs to get stronger still
-Got 10 calls from other GMs telling him that he got a good deal with Stajan, that his cap number was a good one
-Given lack of production his cap hit is a fair number for both sides
-Instruction from ownership/King is to be fair with players and not try to cheat them all out of money on contracts
-In discussions with a couple players right now regarding extensions, going to start talking to RFAs as well, if numbers don't make sense with UFAs they'll be dealt
-No update on search for GM, it will be done quietly
-Does not want to be GM, but list of guys they want to talk to they aren't getting permission to talk
-With prohibition to provide compensation for hiring GMs/coaches, you won't get permission during the season or even until after draft
-Will hire assistant GM as well
-Just had amateur scouting meetings, guys know what the team is looking for
-Team is fully functional right now with Burke as acting GM, no need to hurry
-Will start to focus on Sochi about an hour before he gets on the plane
|
I like Burke's honesty and bluntness (word?).
Just don't like that Stajan comment. It comes off like an Oiler "the rest of the league thinks we're getting better". I don't like the way of using social proof to validate your moves to the public.
I'm not crapping on the Stajan signing, as I believe it was a solid signing. A year too long perhaps, but still solid.

The rumour is that the Sabres are why no teams are granting permission. I think it was SureLoss (could have been Freeway) said that LaFontaine cast a very wide net and asked alot of teams for permission to speak to candidates and that it started to bother some teams. As a result it has been harder for the Flames to get permission to speak to potential candidates.

I actually listened to the interview. In writing, I thought what BB said was a little Feaster-ish. But when you actually listen to it, the underlying tone wasn't to pump himself up, it was in the context to take some heat off of Stajan. I'm sure the Flames know the temperature of the fanbase wrt Stajan, esp with his comment that Stajan takes a lot of critisism because he was delt for a popular player, and BB's intention here was to show that there are many people outside of Calgary that think Stajan is a good player.
Overall, the interview was very candid. He was asked questions, he answered, and his answeres were honest and believable. No over promises or anything weird.
