Of course, there's no way of knowing for sure, I don't know how to get to the other timelines

Tanguay as a Flame without Iginla (basically this year's team) 9 games 2 goals 1 assist (.33 ppg)

Breen was with the flames briefly to start the year and he was told what facets of his game need to improve on in order to become an NHLer. This showing will see if there's been improvements and what his future role is with the club.
First people want to see what our prospects can do in the NHL and then they freak out when a veterans position is being taken by a younger player. We're in a rebuild everyone, get used to some of our established veterans getting demoted or traded for future assets.
I for one am excited to see Breen's progression as I know he improved leaps and bounds last year and hope more of the same has happened this year.

I completely agree with this! I know there will be heart ache and loads of face palms watching some of the kids from the farm come up to play in Calgary but I am ok with it and most of us should be since we all have asked for this.
Finally some vets are being removed/demoted for the youth. Love it.

If D. Jones just crashed the net more, he would be more successful.

Tanguay has always been a support player that depends on good linemates to be productive. Those types of players should be worth more than deadweight in a trade though. The fact Jones actually makes more than Tanguay is hilarious, not to mention O'Brien makes $2 million and belongs in the AHL.

I'm sure some of you heard but Troy Ward was on the Fan this morning and among other things he mentioned that during his latest stint with the Heat, Breen has been getting a crap pile of minutes and Ward feels he is just now back to where he was pre-injury.
He by no means was making any bold predictions but he feels Breen is finally at a place where the Flames management will be able to see what he really brings...then they can decide if they like it or not.

For a brief stint there I really like SOB's game especially his pinches but he's not capable of being that game to game player that brings the same thing every day.
Breen has to come up here and be a wrecking ball. He has to hit, win board battles and do the simple things with the puck.
This is an audition for him and he has to ace it.

I think Breen will have to fight a lot to stay on the team.

Listening to Ward on Breen today on the Fan.... he's been playing a lot - 26/28 minutes, lots of shorthanded minutes and in the shutdown role with Wotherspoon. Ward said he's ready physically, but only has 11 penalty minutes in 20 games down there.
Not on Breen - but he also said that Granlund has been carrying the team since Street left and that Granlund is a warrior... typical Finn was how he put it.

26yrs: Jones (2010-11); 27-18-45 in 70 games. Tanguay (05-06); 29-49-78 in 71 games.
27yrs: Jones (2011-12); 20-17-37 in 72 games. Tanguay (06-07); 22-59-81 in 81 games.
And those are Jones' two best years.
Jones does bring size and relative youth to the team, but is most certainly worth less in terms of trade value.

How are Tanguay's points as a 27 year old relevant? Sure, Tanguay was a very good producer in his day. So what? We traded a (then) 33 year old Tanguay for a 27 year old RW who works harder and brings more grit.
Of course we are not going to get back a guy that can produce like Tanguay could at his peak, because we didn't trade a guy who can produce like Tanguay could at his peak.

I honestly feel that Tanguay had to be moved in a rebuild or they'd have a distraction that would have prevented this team from getting on the same page, and working hard every night.
It's a balance.
Look what's going on up north. It's a tenuous line to get a team happy while losing, and you can't do it with sulking veterans.
If they wanted to turn the page they needed to find someone to take Tanguay, and I'm guessing there wasn't a huge lineup.

Tanguay had to go, we had to take a bad contract back to make it happen, and only a handful of teams in the NHL probably had an ounce of interest in him.
Sucks that Sarich had to go with, as he is a good dman on an expiring contract that probably could have gotten us a 3rd right now (if Hartley put him in the line-up).

I don't think anyone is trying to say otherwise.
But it would have been nice to have 2 non-buyout worthy contracts as a result of that trade, because we've pretty much got contracts that are worse than nothing here.

I don't have a problem with Jones, but I think Feaster's returns on trades were consistently weak (other than all those useful players for 4th and 5th round pick trades).

I let my love of the Flames blind me. At the time of the trade I thought the Flames won the trade, because I wanted to believe that they did. I wanted to believe that O'Brien was going to be the rough and tumble defenseman that the Flames needed. I wanted to believe that he was going to stir up crap. I wanted to believe that David Jones was going to return to being a 20 goal scorer. I wanted to believe that Sarich's career was over and that he would play a couple of games before he saw the light and retired because I wanted the Flames to look good for getting something good for an expiring player. I wanted Tanguay to stink spectacularly in Colorado.
Now. I hate this trade. I don't hate having Jones because he does bring something to the team, but not enough. I don't even compare his worth to his contract, he just isn't what I hoped for. It is nice to have that big contract on the team to help reach the cap floor though. O'Brien had some good moments, but those weren't enough to make up for his weak play. He truly doesn't belong in the NHL anymore.
Man, I hate the return Feaster got on all of his trades now.

So... if Smid is expected back tomorrow... I presume Breen is sitting, which would make this move questionable.

good point. Breen was brought up here to play - or so we were told.
If he is in the press box for more than 1 game to start, then we are being fed a line.
My money is that Smid gets another rest day, or Butler sits.
